I guess that would make me just a "Yankee". My fechins-up would dictate that if you didn't stay for supper when invited, well now thats a serious insult to the cook. So please don't put all of us yankees in the same category, we country folk love to share.

"Yankees' is not a bad term; after all "Yankees" fought for our freedom as a country friend. "Yankees" are always welcome in my house.

You sound like one of them "good yankees"! I promise to do better in my classications!
On a related tangent along the lines of "Southern food", my FAVORITE catfish joint in the world and across Heaven and half of Georgia...is "Bill's Catfish" It is just right across the state line, near Waurika, Oklahoma.
Lord a mercy...even as a Texan I travel there to get a good mess o' that good stuff!

Syn, On your travels north you are more than welcome to overnight here. We can pull up the back "fence" and park your rig there... we even have an outside electric outlet you can hook up to. If you can put up with the mess and the chaos around here. Chicken Fried steak and Biscuits w/Gravy (NOT Package gravy! ) is normal fare at our place.
Just drop me a note and I promise to feed you proper.

You have good taste!! My Dad went down there for supper just tonight. Their Coleslaw just can NOT be beat! We go down there several times a year and stuff ourselves silly.

You are too kind LR. Thank you so very much. I can't pass up home cooking and would certainly enjoy your company.

Their coleslaw too, Robyn, but their catfish for sure. Oh man, sometimes I will call in several orders and go pick it up so as to have some for the night and the next couple of days.
Honestly, if there is anyplace at all that makes a better batch of good ol' Southern fried catfish than "Bills"...then I sure as hell don't know where it is!

Also, my accent is pretty middle-of-the-road American. I think television had a stronger impact on my voice than geography. That's true for a lot of people nowadays ... although I occasionally use phrases like "nowadays", "y'all" and "big ol' honkin' [noun]", so there's still some Oklahoma influence on my vocabulary.
If it helps, Southern Living magazine covers the state of Oklahoma. So that's something.

I lived in CA and always used nowadays.
It doesn't seem to fit anywhere either. I think GoodPasture has it right. Sometimes it seems a little like Arkansas, but then you find that that is because we have Arkansas people moving here, same with California, Texas, etc. I have lived in the south and it is nothing like the south. i have lived in Texas and it isn't like Texas. I have been to MO, and it is a little like that State. It feels more like the Midwest to me, but some I have met there claim that it is the south--technically.

Is Oklahoma Southern or Western?
I think us Oklahomans are in our own little world. We are neither southern or western although some of us do have a southern accent.
I-40 & I35 cross about a mile east of downtown Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City is truly the crossroads of the United States.
I live in Shawnee.

My aunt is from tulsa and has a southern accent (actually, more texan) but my friends wife, who was born and raised in Tulsa has no southern accent at all.
It seems to me that Oklahoma is more like Texas than anywhere else--kind of southern plains-ish. What are your perspectives, and please say what part of the state you're from.

I can't imagine Oklahoma as Southern. To me, the Old West comes up when I think of Oklahoma.
