Hmmm. I always called it Southern... and anything beyond it Southwest (NM, AZ, maybe even SoCal.) Maybe because I think of the U.S. as being broken down into sections rather than relative to where I'm at, and also not necessarily based on the culture there. I really don't know, but I find it interesting that there isn't really a consensus. I'm sure there's a considerable difference in culture between NM and SoCal, but I'd still group them as Southwestern. And I doubt there's any question about what region Maine would be considered.

The United States Bureau of Economic Analysis has the southwest broken down in to a four-state region... Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.

However, the U.S. Census Bureau has Oklahoma in the south-central region with Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Now how can ANYONE imagine Texas (think John Wayne) as anything but "west" ?

It doesn't seem to fit anywhere either. I think GoodPasture has it right. Sometimes it seems a little like Arkansas, but then you find that that is because we have Arkansas people moving here, same with California, Texas, etc. I have lived in the south and it is nothing like the south. i have lived in Texas and it isn't like Texas. I have been to MO, and it is a little like that State. It feels more like the Midwest to me, but some I have met there claim that it is the south--technically.
"Technically", we are part of the Southwest. I feel like a Southerner, and have lived in OKC all of my life. But we do definitely have a lot of the "Spirit of the West" going on too. I guess it just depends on one's experience!

The Midwest feels a lot colder, and the accents are definitely different. I see a difference in the people (although I hate to say everyone in one state or area is the same, since we're not). Interesting question!!

People in the "real South" think we are western. People in the West probably think we are southern. We have an identity crisis.
