e_cuyler is on a distinguished road
I'm from the far Eastern part of the state originally, and it is more Southern, but I'd say the majority of the state is Western. It's interesting how what is considered "the South" has expanded over the years.
My take is that even though there are similarities in certain parts of Oklahoma, it's not Southern--and I'd say that in those cases it's more because it's predominantly rural.

I have always considered it part of the Southwest.

Nah, we're Southern.....it's just a "westernized" version of the Deep South. As I'm sure all of you know the Census places Oklahoma in a subregion of the South known as the West South Central (along with Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana). This is by far the best and most correct designation in classifying Oklahoma. Oklahoma is undoubtedly culturally like Arkansas and Texas, and the northern part of Louisiana. Is it the Deep South? = obviously not, but Oklahoma is still part of the South at large.

I've noticed Okies (and Texans, definitely Louisianans, and to a lesser extent Arkies) tend to be a more rowdy, rough, Redneck bunch = my kinda folks. Maybe we should be called the Cowboy South? I'm cool with the West South Central tag that the Census gives us, however.

At the end of the day, there is no identity crisis for bonafied Okies, only the confused transplants and folks that have never been here before struggle with classifying Oklahoma.
