I'm from Alabama, but will be driving from Fort Smith, AR to Tulsa, OK. for business (I-40 West - Muskogee turnpike - OK 51 West) Can you suggest any good bbq places along the way. We're looking for local flavor and not a chain unless it's really good. Any help would be appreciated.

I couldn't help much with places along the way, but there are several options in Tulsa. Try these. They are ALL locally owned; no chains and come highly recommended.
Knotty Pine « Indie Tulsa
::: RUNTS BBQ :::
Barbecue restaurant with ribs & catering services - Tulsa, OK
Macs
Bon Appetite!

Rib Crib is actually pretty good, and while it is a chain, it is a Tulsa chain. Their original restaurant is on Harvard between 15th and 21st S.
Also Elmers on South Peoria is good.

You might try Papa's barbeque in Chandler OK. Right on main street(Route 66) south end of town. Good grub........

I Know I'm late, but BBQ is my Passion....
Don't forget about Jake's Rib in Chickasha. Earl's Rib Palace in OK City is awesome too. I'd put these places up against any BBQ in the rest of the Southwest or the Deep South.

My favorites so far:
Van's Pig Stand, Shawnee
Head Country, Ponca City
Mr. Spriggs, Oklahoma City
P.S. Any knowledge of great places to purchase smokers and outdoor grilling supplies would be helpful to me as well.

Actually BBQ in the deep south is totally different than Oklahoma BBQ, so it's almost impossible to compare. My husband's family is from North Carolina and I almost died the first time I had BBQ there. It's kind of got a vinegar based sauce rather than the tomato based stuff I was raised on (Head Country). And they always top off their pulled pork BBQ sandwiches with a scoop of cole slaw. Totally different but good--nonetheless, I find it really difficult to call that stuff BBQ.

Actually Head Country has won numerous world championships, so apparently the experts think it's pretty darn good. It's by far my favorite BBQ. I travel to Memphis quite a bit, I've tried Rendezvous's and Corky's, Corky's was very good but Rendezvous's was horrible! It was very dry and their dry rub was not very good.
