Hi Oklahoma, I have a question....

I was having a discussion with someone yesterday who called Oklahoma the south (which I can see why, you have somewhat of the accent and border TX) ... but I disagreed and said you are in the great plains....

So soon after I pulled out my circa 1980's World Book -- and in the first paragraph it said you were a state in the Southwest.... which I don't see at all unless you include the panhandle which borders NM.

So my question to you is what do you great people in OK consider yourselves? Is this a dumb question? If so, I don't care, I just want to know what you think.

Thanks in advance!

Ha, there has been numerous discussions about this. Anyway I refuse to call us Midwest, Southwest or Southeast. We are not entirely any of those regions so I'm perfectly fine anymore just calling it Oklahoma, as many other people should be because the fact of the matter is we aren't one more than the other.

Here's a link to the latest discussion on this subject. http://www.city-data.com/forum/oklah...n-western.html
We aren't totally south or west or midwest...we're just Oklahoma and proud of it.

When I was a kid, we'd visit our California cousins and they'd always introduce me as their cousin from Back East!

Oops, guess I should have followed forum rules and checked if there was already discussion on this. Oh well, now I know that if anyone ever happens to ask me this, I'll just reply, Oklahoma is just Oklahoma, leave it at that.

We are the Indian Nations. Nothing else needs to be said. Next time you get a vacation come down and you will see what we mean..........magnificent horses, great herds of cattle and buffalo, absolutely gorgeous women (see how many Okies have won "Miss America"), and really smart strong men that know the difference between them.

And if your wife catches you looking at the wrong scenery, we have great fishing as well.

Goot one, GP, and within the native cultural traditions, we are all over the map.

Some tribes are considered southern plains in our dance and singing style, but we also have Seminole from Florida,
Choctaws from SE USA,
Cherokees from eastern woodlands,
Delaware from wayyy back east,
Pottawatomies from Great Lakes
Cheyenne/Arapaho from northern plains.
Tonkawas from Texas Gulf of Mexico
I know I left out more than a few, but you get the picture.

Guess that is why our pow wows are so cool!

I'm planning on spending some time in Oklahoma this summer, I've personally never done more than fly over... but I'd love to find out more about the state, and go see what there is to offer.

Haha too funny about catching me looking at the wrong scenery!

Hey thanks for the welcome! Funny that you have family in Cedar Rapids, my brother just bought a house there.. That city isn't exactly my favorite in the state, but I do have good memories there.
