Question Information on Wakita?

Well I'll most likely be around the state this summer sometime, and one of the places me and my friend would love to "hit-up" is humble little Wakita, OK!! Some of you probably know this is where some scenes of the movie Twister were shot, as well as locations in Iowa. (Already hit those up )

I checked out some things on the internet about Wakita having a little museum with props from the movie, and a gift shop, the one in IA had this as well but has since closed down. Even if Wakita doesn't have it's shops anymore, I'm still going to visit for the sake of Twister being my favorite movie.

Has anyone else on this forum visited Wakita for any reason? What shall I expect? Thanks Okies!

Hi metro,
I've been through Wakita before, but not in a billion years. It's way up there in the north/northwestern part of the state and it doesn't surprise me they filmed a lot of the movie there; it's pretty flat.

While you are there, you should visit the Great Salt Plains State Park. It's only about 15 miles from Wakita.

That movie was pretty funny. The local people were very proud to be involved in the movie and will enjoy talking about it with you.

For those who aren't familiar with the story and Wakita, here is a link:

metro, I am actually from Wakita. Here is what you can expect 1) the town is very small, 2) the people there are really nice, 3) you can literally walk the entire distance of the town, 4) there are only 5-6 businesses in the town and you can eat at 2 of them. I hope your trip goes well and that you are not disappointed with what you find.

I haven't been to Wakita since the 60s to visit family. It was a nice town although so small. I couldn't believe they didn't even have a street light. My uncle was the only doctor in town and there was no hospital. Sounds like it hasn't changed a whole lot.

Though Ive never been 'to' Waukita, I have heard of it. Kind of a small little town, almost like Haileyville or Crowder. Id like to go there sometime too, just to see it.
One thing I have to admit, my numerous visits to assorted areas of OK have all been pleasant. The folks are down right friendly, though Lawton wasnt really impressive it may also be that we were in a not-so-great part of town too, otherwise, its awesome.
