Question Eufaula Info

Hi everyone, I have been reading through old posts gathering info on Eufaula and the area, got some great info and found some wonderful pics too ! I currently live in SE Idaho, moved from AZ in 99 and I really do love the state, low cost of living, beautiful country crime rate very low and good people BUT I just cant deal with the amount of snow lol nov and dec is fine but around the end of jan ugh I just cant stand it anymore, plus I have RA which seems to flaire up at this time of year here. We had thought about finding a get away place in AZ but really with the crime rate in alot of the areas it isnt worth it, 364 days of nice weather just doesnt cover the fact you risk getting everything stolen or maybe catch a bullet in a drive by LOL Idaho equivalant of a AZ drive by is when the mailman "drives by" and waves

Back to topic, we have been looking at different areas, 5 years ago we took a trip to fort smith, my husbands family has roots there, and the area has always stuck with me, I remembered driving by the huge lake and until i mapped it out I thought it was part of fort smith, which my husband was right all along and yes he is rubbing it in lol

I have found several homes I am interested in and we are planning a trip in later march to come and check everything out, I have been researching online but have a couple of questions that I just cant seem to find online and if someone local can help me out it would be awesome.

1 Shopping in eufaula ? Is there a grocery store in town ? I am assuming yes since the lake traffic, but just cant tell.

2 Crime rate ? from my research it seems low, I keep running across people saying certain areas are more "rough" but eufaula has not been mentined.

3 Vets in town, this is important for me as I have a very attached to lap dog ( 130 lb neapolitan mastiff ) as well as a bloodhound who will come with me, when I traval with the dogs I always map out the nearest vet and call before hand and ask if they have breed expeirience haha yeah I may be neurotic but better safe then sorry

4 Tornado's and storm cellars, I am not too concerned with the tornado's, in az we had the monsoons and micro bursts, in id w have blizzards and micro bursts , while searching property i have come across storm cellars on some homes but not all, is the area in a tornado zone or is it not ? I think for minds ease I would like to have one just curious why some homes have them and some dont.

I am not too concerned with bugs spiders and snakes, the last two i have phobia's about lol but after dealing with black widows scorpians and rattlers in az it isnt anything big. The chigger though, that little bug sounds like somethng i dont want to tangle with but I am sure I will see it up close and personal, the hubby keeps saying something about turpintine YIKES !!

Hi, drooln1, and welcome to the forum!

I like the way you read the old posts first! I don't live in Eufaula but I go through there sometimes.

1 Shopping in Eufaula: there are at least 2 grocery stores in Eufaula. I have been in one of them and it seemed okay. You will not find the selection the same as a big city, except near Thanksgiving when they will stock more variety.

2 I think you are right, crime would be low

3 I did a search for businesses on the google maps and several vets were listed. Eufaula is kind of a tourist town in the summer, so I think at least one will treat dogs

Looks like Eufaula is on the edge between the light orange area and the dark gold area. A lot of the houses are not occupied year round, and some people just don't worry about tornadoes. I would get a house with a shelter (be sure it doesn't leak water!).

Welcome to the forum. I'm not in OK yet, but we recently bought a house in Mustang and it came with a storm cellar. Ok is part of tornado alley, and most houses we looked at did have storm cellars. There's been other discussions on the forum about tornados, you might want to do a search.

I'm sure some of the other very helpful folks on this forum will answer you other questions.

I can't recall seeing a vet in Eufaula, but you are not too far from McAlester, OK which would probably have one. It's a bigger town. Eufaula is surrounded by little farming type communities, so there could possibly be some vets around.

1 Shopping in eufaula ? Is there a grocery store in town ? I am assuming yes since the lake traffic, but just cant tell.

Eufaula sports two grocery stores. Nichol's Super Saver and Eufaula Food Market. Just a few miles North is Checotah and they have Nichol's SS also and Shelton's Grocery. I shop at Shelton's. Just my preference. I like their deli..they have great sandwiches.

2 Crime rate ? from my research it seems low, I keep running across people saying certain areas are more "rough" but eufaula has not been mentined.

The crime rate is minimal..about normal for a small community with bored kids. It goes up in the summertime (we get lots of bad influences from Tulsa and OKC..according to the local PD). There just isn't alot for kids to do except for sports.

We have several good vets. Dr. Aday has a "Veterinary Hospital" but I have never used him. My husband has and likes him alot. I take my 100 lb Black Lab lapdogs to Dr. Johnson in Checotah. He is extremely good with them and my cats too. We had to take my Sister in Law's dog two days ago to see Dr. Johnson cause he was just getting so old and not doing well. Dr. Johnson had to put him down. Hubby cried, Meagan cried, I cried, Dr. Johnson cried. And he also treats cows, horses, and all other varieties of farm animals.

4 Tornado's and storm cellars, I am not too concerned with the tornado's, in az we had the monsoons and micro bursts, in id w have blizzards and micro bursts , while searching property i have come across storm cellars on some homes but not all, is the area in a tornado zone or is it not ? Yes we are in a TORNADO area. Actually they call this part of the world Tornado Alley. The weatherman said yesterday we have had 13 so far this year. That isn't bad for us. I have a cellar (I inherited the house from my father who had the cellar put in) I hate it. I am way claustrophobic.. I would rather just be blown away in my house. In Checotah it is at the Multi Purpose Building of the Elementary School. Eufaula doesn't have a city storm shelter. Now I know why I live in Checotah. I called the Sheriff's office when I couldn't find it in the phone book. You might consider moving to Checotah instead, at least we have a storm shelter. hahahahaha

Dr. Aday is an excellent vet, located right off of Hwy 69 in N. Eufaula. Unfortunately, he does not seem to have a website.

You can find all sorts of excellent info, photos and video and news about Oklahoma's Lake Eufaula area at Eufaula Lakers - Eufaula, Oklahoma - Lake Eufaula Home
