I have a neighbor here in WA who blames the influx of Californians for the Nisqually quake here back in '01. She says it's the weight of all those people and the new houses they need.

But back in AK we had little quakes regularly. Mostly they were just big enough to register on a seismograph [fortunate, because there were 3 to 5 a day], but every once in awhile there were bigger ones that rattled things. The quakes at home weren't as worrisome as the ones further away, we had a lot more tsunami warnings and watches than quakes strong enough to feel. Haven't been any really big ones since the Good Friday Quake in 1964.

But I also remember quakes in MO, along the New Madrid fault. Terra is non-firma all over the place!

It is generally believed, based upon surviving geological evidence, that a 6.5-plus quake occurred along the Meers Fault in southwest Oklahoma in the 8th century. Not that I'm anxious to see another one.

Yeah, but it depends on where the epicenter is. If it's in the middle of nowhere, there's not much damage. If it's in the wrong spot, you've lots of property damage and people hurt. If the ground isn't stable itself, like clay, there can be some major slippage and sliding. It it's really in the wrong spot, the tsunamis can cause a lot more damage than the quake itself. Rogue waves on the ocean can be bad enough all on their own, when you add the oomph of tsunami pushing one, it can be really incredible. There was one wave - just one rogue wave, no tsunami - that blew out a window in a light house 300' above sea level, way out in the Aleutian Islands.

I have to go with mkfarnam on this one. A 2.4 wouldn't even wake me up in California. Real quakes don't get good until they hit 5.0 on the scale. On the other hand, I've never encountered a twister yet, so I'm sure a little F0 will scare me just fine the first time. Of course, I'm moving in June during twister season so we shall see.

I have felt and heard small earthquakes in Love County. They sound quite a bit like thunder, but a sharper sound.
