Exactly, OkieWolf. The majority of people that think that Oklahoma is the midwest have never been here. I live in North Texas now and it amazes me how mad people get here when it is referred to as the midwest (see Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, TX)....it's the same with Oklahoma. Call us the south central plains or the southwest, maybe even the midsouth, but don't ever call us midwestern. I don't know of one Okie that I grew up with or any in my family that ever considered themselves "midwestern." Only people from out of state seem to think that because they assume it it is geographically (and more importantly) culturally the same as most of the true midwest states.

Hello Casey! I just came across your post and laughed. I moved from MD to OK for school almost 3 yrs ago. (To OU, not OSU) I'm from La orginally so it wasn't to much to get use to, but it is different than MD! I was wondering if you have decided if OK was for you and what you thought Stillwater was like?

Thank you my brethren. This is basically what I been sayin in my earlier posts. My hubby is from the midwest and his whole family are catholics and I was raised southern baptist. His family and friends from the midwest states are very different. When my hubby first came to Oklahoma he was in culture shock as I was when I first went to Wisconsin and Minnesota, I felt out of place. I also work with a few peeps from Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and they was crackin up when they heard Oklahoma bein referred to as the midwest. Not once have I heard any of my family members call Oklahoma the midwest. I don't get that one.

And so why have people who come to Oklahoma for the first time found themselves in culture shock? Could it be they are shocked to pick up a newspaper or see on TV controversial issues being hotly discussed that were settled in their state decades ago, such as cockfighting and the lottery? Fortunately, now, those two issues are well outdated in Oklahoma, but outsiders who visited the states before hand must have brought back a very poor impression of Oklahoma to their friends and relatives. But those who moved to Oklahoma to stay have less culture shock to put up with.
I'm glad that Oklahoma has undeniably changed so much since the 1990's after being so overly conservative and uptight against change. Hopefully, that means new people are no longer finding culture shock as extreme as it used to be upon coming to Oklahoma.

I was in culture shock for sure.....but in a very good way. I love it so far, if I can get used to the weather.

I'm glad to learn Oklahoma's culture shock can happen in a good way. As much as the seasons change in Oklahoma you can only get used to the weather temporarily.

To Casey,
I am from LA and have lived in Southern CA all of my life. I wear clothes from Wal Mart, JC Penney and Mervyns. Sometimes swap meets and yard sales. No, my Daddy didn't buy me a car. I took the bus to college and worked nights and weekends to buy my first car. San Diego is about 1 1/2 hours from where I live. I don't know what types of girls you meet from here. We are not all superficial spoiled brats. Most of us are hardworking, friendly and down to earth.
Enjoy your trip to San Diego and good luck in college in Oklahoma!
