UGh sorry i reread my posting and I was venting!!! yes, i wish they had never told us they had one waiting, we would have been more proactive in our house hunting. This post is really different from what we have learned to expect as Army standards. Their answer to everything is that they are understaffed and the housing is being taken over by Picerne in November. At this point Im even unsure if I want to buy a house, not sure if I am gonna like this post and area, might just be a matter of time before we are out of there.~ Im a New Yorker! Im really trying to be open minded!!!

I see that towns within an okay distance to Fort Sill include Rush Springs, Marlow, Sterling, Walters, Elgin, Fletcher, Geronimo, Cache, Comanche, and Apache. Are any of these places safe for Family's to live in?

We just pcs ed here last month and we were told about the gangs and such...We looked at over 40 homes for rent in a 2 day period...We knew we wanted to live on the North East side in the Macarthur School District, well on the 3rd day we found a great home, in the school district we wanted...and the house is 150 below our BAH (we get 851)...Its just the right size for us (me, my husband and our son) 1400sqft 2 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, central air, all new appliances, HUGE privacy fenced in yard in a very very quiet neighborhood. You just have to look, I personally would try to stay away from anything in the downtown area and right outside of the gates. If you look hard enough you will find something. We are on the waiting list for housing and was told its a 8-12 month waiting list...we are number 1102 out of 1120 on the waiting list...but We are taking our name off the list we love where we are. As far as this post goes, I love it ... it does so much for families ...we came from Fort Drum and that post sucked for more then 1 reason. I love the whole surrounding area the Wichita Mountains are absolutely beautiful, LETRA is nice and I love being only and hour away from Texas and Oklahoma City. Only thing I dont like is the scorpions and spiders YUCK!! Anyways good luck

Sounds like you got stuck in some of the older housing... Sorry you are so miserable! Oklahoma is VERY different from the east coast, that's for sure! If you can't find anything around Lawton, you might consider taking a look around Duncan. It is a smaller town, but the drive from here to the base is an easy one...about 30 min. My Hubby did it for about a year and he enjoyed the drive to the base every day. (House prices are a little less here too.)

Glad you are happy and found a good place! We still take trips up to the base just so I can take pics of the wildlife! If you get a chance go over to Elmer Thomas Park... the Prairie dogs are everywhere and they just love posing for pics!

Hi:Just a note to anyone on the way to Lawton-Ft Sill. I have lived in Lawton all of my life. We raised 3 children here and have 2 grandchildren in the school system. They have all done well & have not had problems with gangs of any sort. There a lot
of things to do in this area including hiking. fishing and biking in the Wildlife refuge .
We are in the process of establising biking and walking trails through out the town.
If you'd like to be involved with the postive aspects of the town access Friendsofthetrail.com and come to our meetings. They are the lst thursday of each
month. Best wishes; Lon Parks

Thanks for the encouraging note LonParks. Looking forward to moving there as soon as my house here in Ft. Hood is sold.
To Iham3214: Hang in there. Things will work out in the end for you. One day at a time.

How's Ft. Sill area these days? Been surfing the net and looked like the housing market is not moving there either. We're still stuck in Ft. Hood- can't sell the house. Yet. Hope soon. Hubby might have to rent (month to month lease) for a while. Anyone out there know of a safe apartment complex that allows month to month lease? Possibly either in the MacArthur School District or Cache S.D. Thanks for your help.

Hopefully you have some potential buyers soon! We are adjusting to Sill, housing has been very good about getting the repairs done to the house they assigned us and we will stay there for the present til we get a feel for the area. The base is small, and just getting used to the shops and commisary closing early!! But the post is quiet, not much traffic, the library and walking tracks and gyms are all close to our house, so thats nice. Did drive up to LETRA and it looked like a lot of fun, very family oriented.... I will try to find out some info on some apartments, we drove out to that part of town for that school district, looked like apt out there, definitely a nice part of town. Im excited about trying to find a job and get settled...just adjusting to ALL THE BUGS!!!!!!!

Glad to hear that you are adjusting. I would love to be settled soon. If only they would let us pick a school for our middle schooler, I would love to live on post specially if the gym, walking tracks and the library is nearby. No buyer yet. We had an offer but it fell through. Guess that was not meant to be. Might drive up in mid july to find and apartment for hubby. Thanks and talk to you later.
