I have lived in this area for my whole life (I do know there are other places on the earth!) and I can't say that I would live in Lawton! I don't mind going there for things that need to be done... work, WalMart, etc... But I would not want to live there.
My mom worked Civil Service at Fort Sill for 35years and drove from Elgin daily!
I hope this is helpful to you!
(My dad just happens to be building some new homes in the Elgin school district. They are very affordable and of the very best quality!! You can email me if you have any questions!!)

Hi Elgingrad! Great post. Would those be the new houses being built just off of hwy 17? (8th st) If so I think I may have posted a couple of pictures of them. Very nice! (no names, no advertising allowed. )

Just an update from Ft. Hood. Haven't sold our house yet (albeit priced really low.) I know school started there last week. Ours will start next week. The girls are happy that they get to stay with their friends. Will keep hoping for a miracle. If hubby likes it there, he will probably "give away our house" then move us over there with him. If not, then he will retire by next year and we have our house here. For the time being, our current situation is working out fine since we did not find that house we are looking for. Will see what happens next. Thanks and till next posting.

Thanks Iham! I am glad that you are liking it there already and I can see why. It's actually picturisque out there than here in Ft. Hood and the base there is quaint. As long as the girls are happy with their school and the schools here continue to be one of the best public schools, then I can handle the temporary separation right now. We are only 5 hours drive apart and it's certainly better than Iraq. Thanks and till next posting.

I see that towns within an okay distance to Fort Sill include Rush Springs, Marlow, Sterling, Walters, Elgin, Fletcher, Geronimo, Cache, Comanche, and Apache. Are any of these places safe for Family's to live in?

I'm a little biased but I can tell you that for raising a family, there is no better community than Elgin. The homes are a little pricy (even higher than Dallas) but the school district is just excellent. Athletics, music, drama, dance and art enhance an academic curriculum that keeps this school well above the state averages.
It may seem to be a little "Mayberry" at first glance but you are less than thirty minutes away from major shopping districts with all the basic necessities available within a few minutes.
If the housing is too much for you, there is also Fletcher just five miles or so farther away. They too have an excellent school (though smaller) district.
Its sad, I too was born and raised in Lawton but left over twenty years ago when the gangs moved into the older established neighborhoods and began wreaking havoc. Lawton has an excellent police force and they do an excellent job of fighting this problem but its just dangerous.

That's OK Raymondp. We have people in here often looking for info on Lawton and Ft. Sill.
Your info is appreciated, and you are absolutely right about Elgin and Fletcher... both are nice places! Welcome to the forum!

LadyRobyn is right. I still check this page. Got our household goods moved last weekend. Got post housing at Ft. Sill but hoping that MacArthur would be gracious to accept my would be 8thgrader in to their school district. Anyone has suggestion on honest loophole/s to use to convince the Admission Officer at MacArthur to accept my 8th grader? Thanks in advance for your help.
