You folks that are looking for houses in McAlester should check out the surrounding communities if housing is so bad in the McAlester area.
Try Stuart, Hartshorne, or even Calvin. Those are relatively short drives to McAlester.

I would have to agree with this person, I just happened to be looking at renting a boat when I went up for my visit with my husband and came across this site: Oklahoma > Lake Eufaula real estate, lakefront properties, lake property, lake homes for sale, waterfront properties, lakefront, waterfront
It has many houses on it and very affordable and in and around the Eufaula area. It's only a 30 minute commute to McAlester. We didn't rent the boat but we checked out the Whole Hawg Days, what fun, I had a great visit and loved the fact that the fastest speed limit in town was 35, here in Houston it's 45 on our main roads and they run you over!! Good luck with your searches!!

Good Luck in Stuart or Calvin. There is nothing there. McAlester is about your best bet of finding a rental. If you find something in Stuart, Harshorne, or Calvin it is mostly ranching type of property. McAlester is the only "almost real" city in the area. I live on a ranch near Stuart so I know what is out here. Ranchs and meth labs.

It really disappoints me to hear about the meth labs in the area debbie. I shake my head in disbelief, but I do believe you because I've heard about the prevalence of that drug in rural areas. I do hope that you have not been personally affected by this scourge.

I've heard from friends and family about how prevalent the meth labs are, but they all say the same thing - 'the nice thing about them is that they self-destruct pretty rapidly. People who have them tend to use their product, and the house blows up or burns down, because nothing goes into maintenance or upkeep.' That's totally different from the growth operations - while some of them are pretty shoddy, others are very well set up and go on for years, if nothing goes wrong. Right before I left WA, there was one ini Seattle that caught fire from some kind of faulty wiring in the house itself [nothing to do with the plant set up] and the guy who owned the place did his best to keep the firemen out! Of course, he failed miserably, and ended up in jail anyway for having a couple thousand plants, but there really is no telling who's growing what where. You just can't tell by simply looking because a lot of them are in 'good' neighborhoods, and if it's well-ventilated, you can't tell by the smell, either. Meth is a whole different story.

You are right about the house fires from meth. I've never lived in an area with as many house fires as here. Those of us that love our ranches just have to close our eyes to what is happening. What else can you do. You call the sheriff when your rob (twice while I was on the property but not in the front yard to stop them) and the the sheriff just says OH it was for drug money. The DA who goes to my church says almost every crime involves meth.

It's not just OK. The first I heard about the fires was from the Ozarks in southern MO, but it happens everywhere there are empty places where squatters can light down. And theft can be for just about anything. Back in AK, there was a lot of coke, and meth was small potatos. At one time we had a rental that I wrote up a contract for stating that by signing it, the renter agreed to our terms, which was zero tolerance for drugs - if they got caught by ANYone, law enforcement or neighbors, anyone at all, they had to vacate immediately, Landlord/Tenant law notwithstanding. Put some people off, but for the most part, they agreed.

Wow, karilbear that is a good lease. I have friends that have rentals, I will pass that on for sure. I do beleilve if you rent or buy in the town of McAlester in the ok neighborhoods you will be alright. Now, they just busted a lab across the street from the police station. These people are not the smartest people on the planet!

So are there any places to rent in Mcalester? I called all the apartments today and they are full. Are there any smaller homes for rent in the area? If you have or know of something to rent let me know.
