Rentals will be hard in McAlester. We have this small guest house and my husband is always asking if I want to rent it to any one and I always say no because I do not want someone on my property I do not know. The Army has classes going on and on all the time. They are 18 month classes and the Depot cannot find rentals for them and lots of the folks have families. We are now telling kthem to leave their familes behind until they find a rental. I believe this area will be a ghost town in a few years when the oil companies pull out. My husband has a hard time even finding hotels to put people for simple 2 or 3 days type classes. Meanig hotels are booked with oil people.

I live near Scipio and it is cattle country. I noticed they built this home sitting out in no where but cattle all arouond and it was built as a spec home that a builder wants to sell, I wonder if that is the home for rent.

I had told people about this before, but I will tell everyone again, the same thing happened to us about the rental situation. We thought we were going to have to pay 2,400 a month at a motel. I called all the apartments, no go, I called the ads in the paper at 8 am, they were gone already, so then one of the landlords of the places in the paper told me to call the real estate offices, they have rental properties they rent for people moving out of the area and want to rent their homes. Just get the phone book and start calling, I got lucky and found a duplex for my husband an hour before we left town to come back home to pack his things because he had already taken the job! Best of luck to you....

Good Luck. I heard people at church today discuss trying to find rentals in the area. I would almost buy one of the tiny homes downtown and sell it later on. I think some are real cheap but renting it would be more than buying because of the oil companies in the area. Now when they pull out in a few years every house will be on the market to rent. We'll be a ghost town (the way I like it).

"Big Mac" is home to the most violent prisoners in the United States. They also have a medium security facility that allows inmates to work outside the prison during the day. I've been told time and time again in the last 25 years that McAlester is a rough town.

Other lakes in Eastern Oklahoma include Lake Eufala at Eufala and Grand Lake at Grove - although there are other communities on the 60 mile lake, too. This south end of this lake has the world's largest multiple arch dam in the world. Brove is a fun area with things for kids to do.

Big Mac" is a big turn off. When people visit me from other States, I can seen in their eyes the horror of that place. I would never live close that place unless there was no other place to live. Now they have these street crews that are everywhere with I van and couple guards. I hate it because I believe the "low security imates" are able to case out the place when they get out.

Lakes are nice and easy access.

HI,

My husband is a DAC and we are moving to McAlester in June 2009. We need a 3 or 4 bedroom rental. My daughter takes gymnastics and is on team (level 4). We need to find her a gym. Any help is welcome. Can someone tell me where Stillwater, OK is in relation to McAlester.

Hello Homeschoolmom,
My husband is at DAC too. Where are you moving from? I homeschooled our children too! Stillwater is almost 3 hours from McAlester. My oldest went to OSU located in Stillwater. Her sister went to Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee which is still 2 hours. We live way out in the country away from McAlester. We bought a ranch and raise cattle. If I can be of any help, let me know.
Debbie

Hi Debbie,

I thought I had lost this site but thankfully I just found it. Thank you so much for responding to my post. We are moving from Florida in about 5 weeks. I am very concerned about renting a home site unseen. We have considered driving out early for a look around. I have looked all over for a gymnastics gym for my daughter. It looks like Ada, Muskogee, and Poteau are my closest choices. Are there any family friendly cities between these cities (gyms) and McAlester or is McAlester my best choice? Are rentals still hard to find or in demand? I am looking for home with space for homeschooling. I have had such a hard time finding information on rentals. Anything you know would be appreciated.

Thanks so much,
sherri

That is incorrect. OSP houses only maximum security now and they are on lock down 23/7.

The crews you see are all from Jackie Brannon CC which houses minimum security inmates. They are the ones you see on work release or DOT crews. No medium security inmates are allowed outside the fence in any OK DOC facility.

Most of the minimum security inmates are non-violent. As for "casing the place out when they get out", I am pretty sure the inmates want to get as far from the facility as possible when they get out. Come on, people. Think about it. If they were going to do some more crimes, why would they commit one right next to the prison or where they worked on a crew? That is why most crews are only allowed along the highways and never in any neighborhoods.

OSP is pretty scary, and linicx was right about it being notorious. I wouldn't live anywhere near there either. Then again, there are burglaries all over the state and not necessarily next to a prison.
