You have to wonder about some of the other state forums, anytime someone inquires about something that may be a little "questionable", they are really quick to send out the damage control. I've lived in some of these states that are very popular destinations and being touted as "utopias", perfect in every way. Some relocaters are going to be in for a big wake-up call when they get there. I'm open to hearing the good and the not-so-good aspects of Oklahoma.
This forum was very helpful in making our decision to relocate to OK...
Most convincing however were the negative comments I'd see from the kind of people who were not to my liking, who'd occasionally showed up on the Tulsa and OKC sub forums.

I liked the very things they were complaining about and figured if they hated OK, we'd love it.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, CG! You hit the nail on square on the head.

On the flip side of that, some of the very things that some people consider to be in the "plus" catagory about a state/place, are exactly the things that are a TURN-OFF to me.

In many instances, what made me rule out a state I started researching were not so much the negatives posts, but the very things some posters were touting as a good reason for moving there! For instance, I see "lots of new sub-divisions are sprouting up everywhere!" and go UGH!

Yes, I have seen "lots of new sub-divisions" sprouting up in Stillwater and so how one poster has described Stillwater as - "traffic, traffic, traffic." So I know why you go UGH!

I really love the not so good aspects. It encourages folks I won't like anyway to not come here in the first place.......saves me a lot of time and trouble in proving my dislike........

one of my daughters and her husband live in Stillwater and love it. They both of course went to OSU and have nice jobs there. I can't handle the traffic when I visit but it is one town in OK that has about everything one needs without having to go to Tulsa for it.

Peggy, I want to live close to town but have a little breathing room. We are so close to our neighbors house now we can spit on it! What would you suggest? What area of town is a good area and what area of town/country is a good area?
I was also reading about the corrupt stuff going on in your city government, you should live in Houston, our D.A. was sending racial emails out and inappropriate sexy emails to his secretary. When they found out about him doing this on his government computer he started deleting them and is now in trouble for that and was asked to step down. Our Sheriff was using inmates as 'slave labor' to build a fence on his ranch and is now facing charges of 'slavery'.
We came up for a 'look-arond' and we loved it!!! Y'all are so nice and we can't believe people are still waving at you as you pass them, just being nice. We never ran into any 'ugly' people as we call them here, everyone has a chip on thier shoulder. We ran into nothing but smiling folks. We can't wait to move to your town. I don't even care if the roads are bad, but I will be involved in helping to make McAlester a better place for my grandbabies to grow up in, when I have them!!
Thanks so much Peggy, please let me know...

THAT is a great attitude, helping to make where you move a better place. McAlester will welcome you! I like the McAlester area too; it's pretty and laid back. As for the corrupt politics, it looks like the rats are being smoked out of their nest there. More power to the good people of McAlester.

Kat, I would live outside of McAlester, because within the city limits seems a little crowded to me. You might be able to find a small acreage or a house on a large lot inside the city limits though. I would be sure to get a place on the higher ground in McAlester. The south and east sides seem to be nicer, but I don't know the residential areas that well.

I don't live in McAlester. The largest town close to me is Holdenville, about 45 miles to the west. We go to McAlester to shop, or to eat at a restaurant.

Out of town, I would try to find a small acreage, preferably on a paved road, to the north, east, or southeast of McAlester. I would stay away from the munitions plant on the SW, and the dump on the west. At times they have to do burning at the dump, so the smoke can be a problem.

You do have a great attitude, like Synopsis said. The main dudes involved in the corruption are either a doddering old fool or headed to prison, so maybe the rats are on the losing side. McAlester could always have had more stores, businesses, etc., but you always had to pay to play. We just have to keep new rats from getting into office, and closely watch what is going on in our city & county governments.

I live west near Stuart in the hill area and love it as long as those oil trucks don't kill me.... Bought a few hundred acres and I play mostly on it. Now on the East side is getting real bad with the oil. I believe they have oil building everywhere. Basically, the oil companies are making swiss cheese out of southeast Oklahoma.
