Ada is the largest town in its area. It has a typical small town downtown with antique stores, big box stores like Home Depot in the newer parts of town. It has a fairly large hospital. We live about 35 minutes from there and go there occasionally to shop. East Central University is there.

Ada is a neat place. Until recently, it was a little sleepy, but now there is lots of business moving in due to the cost of living and it being the headquarters of the Chickasaw Nation. It's a nice town, but has a clouded past. Read the book "The Innocent Man" by John Grisham, which is about two men who were accused of murder by the corrupt DA there and convicted; spent many years in prison on death row for a crime they didn't commit.
I love Ada. I was born there and it's a great little city. I just have to be honest about its past. I'm sure you'd love it there.

The DA in the book has decided to retire and he is not running for reelection this year. I am in his district.

Williamson's co-defendant, Dennis Fritz also wrote a book. It's called Journey Toward Justice.

I think Pederson should be in PRISON. It is only my opinion, but after reading Grisham's book, I have very little doubt based on the transcripts of the trial and other information. Pederson is a greedy, corrupt politician and tried to feather his hat in the most expedient manner by prosecuting and convicting two innocent men.
There were so many people guilty of criminal actions in this case (a former Chief of Police on the jury for one) that it disgusts me it happened in my birthplace. Fortunately, Ada is a great place and the good overshadows the bad. I do have a hard time understanding how the citizens of Pontotoc County elected this man to the position of DA decade after decade. My guess is they just thought convictions meant good hard work, and were uninformed on how those convictions were obtained. Be advised, as good as the citizens of Ada are, there is a huge good ol' boy network going on in that city. I think these books will go a long way toward eliminating the good ol' boy infrastructure.

I think it was the GOB network more than anything, as to why he kept getting reelected. If no one ran against him, how were the citizens supposed to vote for someone else?
People all over the country have been wrongfully convicted, and then freed because of DNA evidence. Ada isn't the only place it happened, it is just the case Grisham chose to write a book. |
