Hey, I'm new to this site. I have been trying to find out the water table in hughes co . We bought property not far Weleetka Ok. Right down hill 1/4 mi is Canandian river. We are wanting to drill a well, don't think there is rural water that far out. Any info would be greatly appreicated.
Ask any of the local drillers you might have do it. You really don't want to dig a well by hand yourself! Water tables are funny things, you might get a well at a certain number of feet in one place, while a quarter mile away it could be 10 times as deep or a lot shallower.
This happened in CO and not OK but I wanted Kari to see it... Remember that property down here you were considering?? It had the SAME kind of Gas well and the exact same signs posted on the property...
Welcome to Hughes County, or Okfuskee, sanmill. Depending on where you live and the proximity to wells, you will most likely be drinking bottled water regardless of whether you get city water or well water.
When they dug a new well for us a couple of years ago, they didn't hit water and were going to charge us to drill a second one.
They said there is no guarantee they will hit water. Of course, Uncle Don went out there and raised cane with them. He has been here forever and they were kind enough to drill a second time which hit water.
So be prepared to pay for two wells! And get used to drinking bottled water. We don't drink our well water. How times have changed.

Yeah... the one the guy said was in fine shape, just a few small dings in the siding, blah blah, and you must have taken pix of the wrong place? He didn't have much to say when I told him one of those pix was of his sign in the window! Too bad, I could use that house here. Of course, if it were here, I couldn't have afforded it, but nothing in life is perfect.
Hi Sanmil, I'm not familuar with Hughes county, but local drillers will be, and most will be honnest with you. Often there will be several water sands, the top sands may be poluted. You should ask for a drilling log, and material list. The EPA has a web site showing major water polution sources which might help. There are thousands of shallow wells unpluged or improperly pluged which can cause problems. Many oil and water wells were never recorded, I have stumbeled across a number of them, OCC has a web page where you can find (recorded) wells by legal description.
That is so sad to hear. Growing up we only had well water and it was THE BEST tasting water I've ever had in my life. It was also cold right out of the tap, even in the middle of the Summer.
I want to thank you all for your help. I know there is natural gas that runs along the road. There are homes down the road and I know they have wells. I was just curious about the area, the maps are hard to read. Its hard to tell whats contaninated and what isn't. The area is peatty, but this water thing is scaring me. As far as bottle water that's all I drink.
Continental Resources put a well pad and frac pond on our land a year ago. They had a temporary rig on site to hold the lease. (I guess) But it's been gone over 6 months. We were told that they are planning to bring in a bigger rig in October. In the meantime, the frac pond has a leak and is spilling saltwater and who knows what else in our pasture. It also ran over into our neighbors pond. Continental has been running trucks 24 hrs a day to get it drained. (A lot of activity going on here after the whole place being abandoned for so long.) Our cattle pond is fed by a freshwater spring which sets on the backside of the frac pond. A lot of our neighbors have wells they use for water, and I'm pretty sure that our underground spring is connected to their water supply. This is a big mess. Our pasture looks awful. I'm hoping our pond will be okay. Not sure what to do. Continental says they will sit down with us after they get it all cleaned up. The lawyer we contacted said to wait and see what they have to say. (just sit tight) The Corporation Commission is not saying much either. I wish they would just clean up and get out.
The Oklahoma water resources board has a web site that you can check for all sorts of info using legal description, etc. You might want to check it our..
