Default Oklahoma gardeners Thread

Finally got our tomatoes planted. Well, almost all of them.

27 mater plants

6 mounds of squash and zucchini squash

bell peppers, not planted yet, ran out of steam

watemelons, not planted, the seeds we had have not sprouted.

I nearly died after only 2 minutes of planting. Man, how pathetic is that? Don't answer that. Any other gardeners out there?

Post your pics of your pigs and goats too!

Good thread RB. If I had a patch of land big enough for planting, I'd have a big garden. The best food in the world comes from your own garden. CG, when are YOU going to plant that garden, or better yet, Lilly!

You must've been the guy stealing watermelons from our patch of land back when I was growing up. Better yet, you were probably the guy stealing them from out yard once they were picked!

Oh heck, I'd let you steal from my garden anytime, just because of your service to our country. There would be enough to go around, IF I had a garden.

Have you ever watched "Paul James, Gardening by the Yard". BJB and I love to watch his show, he's from Oklahoma.

I am pathetic when it comes to gardening. I always buy lots of stuff in the spring, with wonderful plans. So far I've only planted my herbs. I have tomato plants that are sitting on my counter in the kitchen, and beautiful flowers still in their store pots sitting on my deck -- all waiting to be planted. I really hope to get to them this week. One year I did a full garden (green beans, corn, squash, onions, tomatoes, zuchini, etc.) when we first bought our house in NJ 21 years ago. Haven't done much in the way of gardening since. Always told myself it was because the kids were too little to invest the time in gardening. Since they are now 16 and 18, I don't think that excuse will hold water.

But -- on the positive side, I joined the OK food co-op and just placed my first order!

No, GP, I'm buying, not selling Thought I would try some buffalo meat. Doug knows what it is, but I won't tell the kids until they've eaten it. Or maybe not then either.

I forgot to take a picture of the garden, but it has, so far, beans, peas, tomatoes, lettuce, cukes (both pickling and eating), water melons, figs, apples, pears, peaches, plums, peppers in all sorts and temps.

Ready to plant strawberries, ruhbarb, asperagus, tobacco and indian corn, as well as winter squashes and summer squashes.

Here are some critter pics:

Chickie Condo

One of the goats:

And some of the pigs:

You better have a big yard and a stout fence. Buffalo will walk right through a 5 strand barbwire fence, so you would probably need at least a range fence that is pretty goat tight.......either that or a 40 (minimum) acre yard with a good fence.

I think the auction over in Prague has an exotic animal auction once a month, and there are frequently buffalo calves on sale there. If you need a processor, I know a guy who kills for a living.

If it were me, I would just check the super markets and buy the meat, or locate a buffalo breeder in your area and buy one that is ready for the slaughterhouse. You should be able to get one for under $1500 and processing should only be about $300 or so, not bad for 1,000 pounds of meat. You will spend another $1,000 or more to get the head mounted and the hide cured.........
