We are considering moving to Oklahoma sometime next year. My husband is retired from the Air Force and now works from home for a military contractor. I am a teacher, so I know that I would have no problem finding employment. We have three middle/high school age children. We currently live in South Dakota, which is a great fit for our conservative values, but is becoming an increasingly unaffordable place to buy a house. We know that for the money we could get more house in Oklahoma than in South Dakota.

These are our priorities when looking for a place to finally put down roots after years of the military moving us around:

As part of his job, my husband travels a lot to different military bases, so a reasonable distance to an airport is important.

We want decent schools for our kids. They have gone to school in many different states, and we know that much of what kids get out of a school is what they put into it. We are mostly concerned about schools that are safe to attend. My youngest son would love a school with a JROTC program. One of our sons runs cross country and track and the other wrestles and plays football. Our daughter is a cheerleader, runs track, and is involved in theater and choir.

We want to find a nice church that is big enough to offer programs for our kids...we are Baptists.

We would like to be near enough to a base/post to shop at the commissary and possibly utilize other services. Being close to a VA is also important for my husband's medical care. (especially as we get older.)

Reliable internet is extremely important for his job. This is probably the number one factor in deciding where we can live. We are in Rapid City, which is the second largest city in South Dakota, and we have the worst internet connection of anyplace we have ever lived. When we first moved to South Dakota in 2020, we lived in a small town of 4000 and the internet was very reliable. It never dawned on us that we would have a worse connection moving to the city.

We are thinking that Lawton is a good fit for us. I have been researching the schools, Fort Sill, the churches, and all of the other things on our list, but the one answer I can't really find on google concerns reliable internet. If anyone on this forum could tell me about the reliability of the internet in Lawton, I would be forever grateful! Or if anyone has any other suggestions for me, I would love to hear them.

Stillwater would also be a very good choice. It has an incentive offer that will pay you up to $9000 to move there to be a remote worker and willing to buy a home.

Stillwater schools are highly rated. The high school football team does good every year. The high school has a nice performing arts center. The new performing arts center at OSU attracts world class acts, such as the New York Philharmonic for starters. So, after graduating from high school, attending OSU is just a very short trip way.

Stillwater has airline service at its airport to DFW with free parking. If Stillwater grows enough, maybe another hub airport destination will be offered in the future. The Tulsa and Oklahoma City airports are not quite an hour and a half drive away.

There are several big Baptist churches to choose from in Stillwater.

Stillwater has a VA clinic.

Fiber optic for the Internet is increasingly being installed in Stillwater. The Skyline area is currently getting it installed, which is one of the most desirable middle-class neighborhoods in Stillwater. Stillwater Junior High School is just a short walk away. New homes near that neighborhood are under construction or completed.

Vance Air Force Base in Enid is the closest military base at an hour's drive away.

Summers in Stillwater aren't quite as hot and dry as they are in Lawton, so that would be a bonus. Further consider the livability of Lawton is only rated at 60, compared to 73 for Stillwater.
