We went to Okeene on Monday for some field work. As usual, when we go to a place we have never been before or we know we really like, we plan on making a day of it.
What a gorgeous area Okeene and Watonga etc are part of. Located NW of Oklahoma City, Okeene is a small town but is buzzing with activity. Their economy is strong due to (among oter things) wheat farming, a pig feed operation, a company that produces dog biscuits, and of course the oil industry.
It is also loaded with culture. Such as:
The Chisholm Trail:
This is the trail that was used to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas through Oklahoma.
More on this can be found here:
Along The Chisholm Trail
We also found one of the first homesteader's cabin in Okeene, the Hoffmann Homestead. Can you imagine they raised 17 kids in that cabin???
Now, Okeene is the diamondback capital of the world and has its annual round-up in May. This is their headquarters:
And then we stopped at the Henry Roman Nose park and campground.
The campground rents teepees for $8 a night. They even are outfitted with electricity
