Saying Good-bye to a 4-footed family member...
As Redbird knows, I have been a little sad lately... My Dad and step-Mom made the heart wrenching decision to send both of their horses to live with my Step-Sister in TX. It isn't a bad thing... Dad is getting older and the upkeep of the girls was getting a little rough for him.
My Nieces grew up around those horses, and love them dearly so I KNOW they would be just as spoiled down there... but my heart was still a little sad. Those horses have been a part of our family for over 20 years and I have always called them my 4-footed hairy sisters...
They were supposed to go down to TX tomorrow...
But my Dad just called a little while ago. Dixie started acting sick, so they took her (and SweetPea) to the vet... They thought she had colic or maybe a twisted gut...but nothing they tried helped her. In the end they decided it was best to put her down. Dad left SweetPea there overnight, so she will know what happened... Those 2 have been together most of their lives.
Rest in peace Old Girl...you will be missed more than you know.
Sweet Dreams Freckle face...

GP, I just had to go listen to that song...sums up my Dad more than you know.
A little story as a testament to what a sweet girl Dix was.
Just a few short weeks ago, Mom had some relatives visit and they wanted to go ride the horses. Mom's cousin lost the stirrup a short ways into their ride. It isn't often that Mom or Dad ever bothers to cinch up the saddles real tight if they are just riding in the pasture because both of the girls are so good natured and slow you would have to try REAL hard to fall off of one of them. (The Nieces ride them bareback most of the time)
Mom told her cousin to pull up and she rode up to the side of SweetPea and leaned over to help her cousin get her foot back in the stirrup... well Mom leaned just a little too far and the saddle spun.
According to Mom, Dix side-stepped just far enough that she didn't wind up UNDER SweetPea and then she stood stock-still with that saddle hanging under her and Mom in a heap all tangled up. Mom shattered her wrist in the fall, so she sent the cousin back to the house for help.
In the meantime, Mom reached up with her good arm and unbuckled the saddle so it would fall to the ground.... She said Dix stepped over the saddle, circled around and stayed right by her side till Dad got there in the truck.
We were all amazed... not so much that she didn't spook, but that she STAYED. Those 2 horses are rarely more than a few feet away from each other and if you want them to go somewhere, you only need to lead one. The other will be right behind. Dix was one heck of a good friend.
I just wish she and Mom had gotten one more ride together...
Thanks all...and Syn, I'm sorry to hear about your pup. We lost one of our Girl cats last year and there is still an empty place in our house. Our two girl cats were sisters and like the horses they were inseparable. Every once in awhile we still forget and call her name...

She's a beauty. A friendly, peaceful face. Just looking at the photo I took an instant liking to her. I'm so sorry for your loss, and thanks for the kind comments about our dog Bingo. He had been with us no more than a few years, but I have never been more attached to an animal than him. I still miss him very much and expect him to come running up to me with those painful eyes (he was seriously abused by previous owners and we rescued him) asking for a reassuring pat.
Dixie really did have a beautiful, freckled face. I can understand the emptiness with her gone. Twenty years is a long time and you were lucky to have her with you. The very last picture is my favorite.
