Default Looking for a college...

Hey Everyone,
I will be graduating from high school next year, and I'm wondering what college's I should look into in Oklahoma. My dad will be retiring in several months, and my family may be moving to the DFW area, which is why I'm looking for colleges around Oklahoma and Texas. So what do you think? I want to major in political science (and go to law school after that). Just to give you an idea of where I stand academically-- I have a 4.3ish GPA, 1200 SAT, Varsity basketball and cross country, SGA President(twice)/VP/Treasurer, I'll have an associate of arts degree in Pre-Law with a 3.9 college GPA(via dual enrollment), and plenty of community service hours. Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like you can take your pick! You should go where ever it makes you happiest. Unless of course, your're parents are paying. Then I am sure they will have say. Obviously, if your parents are moving to DFW, UT will be in the running.

Just don't take any more student loans out than you have to.

I would think with what you mentioned of your background, you should receive a number of scholarships. Be sure to research them all very well. There's a lot of money out there, and most years a lot of it goes begging.

Check out U. of Tulsa! One of the best colleges in the nation, including an outstanding law school.

Most colleges and universities have websites. Check out whichever ones interest you, and apply for every grant and scholarship you can. If you plan on a career in law, pay particular attention to the stats on what percentages of how many graduates of various law schools pass their respective bar exams. You really don't want to waste your time and energy in a school where less than half pass on the first try. Another thing to keep in mind is where you expect to practice eventually. It won't do you a lot of good to ace the New York bar if you plan to practice in Texas, for instance.

Thanks for the input everyone! I am aware that most colleges have websites lol. I have done tons of research already into many different colleges. But I just wanted some personal opinions

As for scholarships, I'm certainly seeking them out. I won't recieve much need based financial aid, because of my dad's income. But I may go Air Force ROTC and become a lawyer there, which would help tremendously with the cost. I have looked at the U of Tulsa some, and it looks pretty neat! I will have to look into it more. What do you guys think about OU? I've heard mostly good things about it, and I've been to the campus. Not to mention, I have met the automatic admission requirement for OU, so I at least know that I can get accepted there.

Which college you go to will definitely depend on the type of "college experience" you are looking for. Also, do you want to obtain your law degree at the same institution you attend for your bachelor's? If so, that narrows the field considerably.

FWIW, I attended both OU and OSU as an undergrad so I can give you my personal (and admittedly biased) opinions. For the most part, I found the OU student body (especially the freshmen) to be rather wealthy, pretentious, and Greek-focused. I know not all students are that way, but it seemed I was surrounded by them. The town of Norman is very nice and offers lots to do, especially with the proximity to OKC. By comparison the OSU student body seems to come from a much wider socio-economic cross section. I, personally, found OSU students on-whole to be more down-to-earth than the vast majority of OU students. While Greek life is a big part of the OSU campus, not participating in it didn't seem to be the social kiss-of-death it was at OU. Stillwater is definitely a college town (more so than Norman). When the students leave in the summer, it's a virtual ghost town (and all the residents revel in the relative peace).

If you are considering the OU AF ROTC program, you should know that OSU also has an AF ROTC program. As I understand it, each unit is given a certain number of "billets" to be filled and the cadets compete for those spots. You might want to consider which school would have more competition for the "JAG" spots (sorry, I know JAG is a Navy term, but we are a Navy household). I also know OSU doesn't have a law school, but I personally know some great lawyers who did their undergrad work at OSU.

I can't help at all with impressions about the University of Tulsa, but I know there are several law students who post over on the Tulsa city forum. You might want to post over there to get more information from them.

I'm actually currently studying at TU, and have been involved in myriad organizations, so if you have any questions, just ask! I know tons of TU history and facts, along with tons of people, so I could help.
