Default Angler Help

The one thing DH and I miss from the east coast is the fish. Even our supermarkets had extensive fish counters with all sorts of fish available. Because we're fishermen, we're not amiss to catching our own dinner. Doug has a state fishing license, and I know in most cases you need a license for the lake you want to fish in as well.

My question: where can we fish for trout? I sorely miss a cornmeal and flour dipped trout cooked outside. Also, until we can get our gear together, where can we buy fish, outside of the frozen stuff at Walmart? Is there a good fishmonger in OKC anywhere?

Trout in Oklahoma is pretty limited, due to the few cold water creeks and rivers in the state. Check the Fishing regulations available anywhere licenses are sold.

I don't know OKC fish markets, but in Tulsa there is Bodeans on 51st east of Harvard,
Bodean Fish Market

All seafood is flown in fresh twice daily from around the world.
and the White River Fish Market on north Sheridan.
White River Fish Market and Restaurant of Tulsa, Oklahoma
Quote:
Since 1932, White River Fish Market & Seafood Restaurant has been selling and serving fish as good as anything you will find along the seashore with a line out the door to prove it!

Unlike the coastal cities who sell the fish harvested in their regions, White River's market sells a wider variety of seafood. Being centrally located in the United States allows White River to fly in seafood direct from the suppliers from all coastal areas of North and South America.

I fish for trout quite a bit, in Oklahoma a very good spot is on the lower Illinois River, just south of the Tenkiller dam. You are allowed 6 fish and there is no slot limit like in Arkansas on the White river. The problem this time of year is the dam generates almost every day. When it's generating you really can't fish very well, at least I've not had any luck. Here is the power generation web site:

Hydropower Release Schedule

Here is the trout stocking schedule for Oklahoma:

Trout Stocking

The best time to fish is late fall and through the winter. The white river in Arkansas is another good spot, they do not generate near as often like Tenkiller does. I go over and fish below Beaver dam quite a bit, you can usually catch your limit within one hour, but there is a 5 limit per day and a 13" - 16" slot.

You need a fishing license plus a trout stamp for each state.

I used to buy fish at Albertson's stores in the OKC area.

Whenever we go to the coast, that's all I eat is fish and other seafood. People make fun of Red Lobster, but they do have a "catch of the day" on their menu that is good, and not fried like most restaurants serve. You might like to fish for bass, crappie, and catfish in lakes near you.
