Hi,

I am looking to relocate permanently to the OK region, to be somewhere near Canadian County and the Mustang area since I have had two phone interiews to work for the school system there. What is life like in Canadian County? I've done some research and don't want to live in a busy area since I currently live in the Baltimore Metro area and want to live in a small town, down-home atmosphere. I am originally from TN and have been in MD for over 30 years. I have English Mastiffs and want a good amount of land to romp with them and to grow some of our own food. In researching places, I am currently leaning toward Luther in terms of getting some good amounts of land and a decent sized home for the price. Any thoughts on life in Luther? Anyone have any great recs for vets with giant breed (>150#) dog experience?

I live in Mustang in Canadian County. We've been here since the end of February. We researched quite a bit before we moved from NJ to OK, and picked Mustang for a number of reasons.

We're very happy with the town. It's a small town atmosphere, and just outside the city limits you can purchase homes where you can keep livestock. My daughter attended Mustang High School and I subbed from March until the end of the school year. I found the schools to be very good.

If there's anything specific you would like to know about Mustang, let me know. BTW, the Mustang school district is difficult to get into. Good luck if you've gotten this far. It's a good school district to work for -- from what I've seen.

Thanks for the reply! I'm interested in knowing what the cost of living is like since the taxes are higher than in I pay now in MD. I'm curious about things like cost of as, gallon of milk and if there are any health food stores nearby. All of my research so far has been from the internet. It would be good to know what's available besides the Lowe's and Super Wal-Mart, not that I have a problem with them. How did you find the students to be overall in Mustang? Both of my interviews have been for a position in Mustang Middle but I was told the high school has an opening too and that my information would be given to the principal there since I have a lot of experience teaching at that level. Did your daughter like her experience at Mustang better than her NJ school, about the same....? Whatever you can share is great and I really appreciate it!

Well, it depends on what taxes you're talking about. My property taxes here in Mustang are about $1300 for a 1500 square foot house, and they were about $3900 in NJ for a 1200 square foot house. Income taxes are a little less. Car insurance is less. Homeowners insurance was more. State income tax rates are lower in OK than NJ.

Gas here is $3.79 a gallon right now (as you know gas prices change hourly). As for food, I find the prices are maybe a little lower here, but there is tax on food. I haven't found any health food stores here in Mustang --- but I wasn't looking for one either. I know you can find health food stores at the mall, though.

I didn't sub at the middle school level, so I can't comment on them. I subbed at a few elementary schools, and also the mid high school (9th graders), and the regular high school. My daughter's comments on her first week at Mustang High School: "they're too nice, too friendly, and have too much school spirit." She came from a pretty tough high school in NJ, and she's has been slowly losing her "edge". The kids were very nice, and she made friends easily and quickly. She'll be a junior in the fall, and I'm sure she's going to have an excellent experience.
