Thanks. I did read there is a hospital so there should be a gp or two.
My daughter is an RN at that hospital. She thinks the care is superior to Stillwaters. She lives in Perkins and could have been an RN at either hospital.

That says good things. The nurses see everything and know the score. Thanks!
I'm curious about the availability of doctors in the Cushing area. This is one of the places I'm looking into and do not have a car.
Also, some of the propertys are listed as "as is" with improvements like the roof needing replacement. The price is sooooo much lower than California I could buy over renting but would replacing a roof cost more than going for a property that was true "move in" quality?
I currently live in Cushing, moved here about 8 months ago. I liked it so much, I brought my mom down from IL to live here, too.
Doctors are easy to find, as there is a hospital here that is part of the Hillcrest Medical Group in Tulsa, and they have specialists visit Cushing regularly. If you need transportation, there are transportation services available to you (not sure of costs involved, but I have seen them around town). Sometimes, you have to schedule proceedures in Tulsa that are not done in Cushing.
As for a house, since the housing market has crashed so badly, there are alot of properties that are move in ready. In this particular area, it is not surprising to find houses ranging from $40,000 to upwards of $400,000 that are liveable as is. I would be VERY careful of buying any house that is not move in ready, as there are alot of houses here that are full of mold. A good realtor to contact (whom I used) is Tommeye Waltman. You can find her on the Chamber of Commerce website, I'm sure. Gould Realty is also very reputable.
If any member of your household is interested in employemnt, there are lots of jobs in the oilfields around here to choose from, if they can stand the heat. Otherwise, options for jobs include mostly retail and foodservice. I have heard rumors of a telemarketing group starting up here, as well as some talk of a refinery and a new pipeline coming in from Alaska.
The ppl here are generally pretty nice and very friendly. The police are very lenient on locals when it comes to traffic issues (such as seatbelt laws and turn signal useage)- all the stuff that many police forces get "a bad rap" for enforcing. The kids here are pretty well behaved and don't cause TOO much rukus. The town is DEFINATELY family oriented.
The oil companies take turns sponsoring local get togethers, like fish fry's and a "Blues and BBQ Festival". These are all pretty much free to the community.
Cushing is located about 50 miles (an hour) from Tulsa and OKC, and just 20 minutes from Stillwater, where OSU is. There are beautiful lakes all around us, with hunting and fishing abound.
Overall, I would say that I love it here. It's a great place to raise your family or retire in.
Downtown Cushing isn't much to brag about since it's kinda runned down and partly abandoned, but I must say it sure has a very nice high school campus that the town can take lots of pride in.
Good luck if you find a house that needs a new roof. If it's like in Stillwater the roofing companies are way behind from replacing roofs from hail damage.

Susan
I'll be moving there end of August. The house is having the last touches of finishing a refirbishing in the meantime. I'm so excited to be leaving southern California for a place with breathable air, space and something besides cars.
When I was visiting we drove up a hill outside town. Cut the engine and... silence. I love all the lakes. Its been a long time since I went fishing, but I would love being able to again.
I have friends who live there too, which is one of the reasons Cushing had an advantage over other places, and a bunch of others in reasonable distance too. My friends moved there six years ago and love it.
The community activities sound wonderful and everyone I met was very friendly, and while I've been calling local places to get information, one very nice lady welcomed me even if I haven't moved. Blew me away...
What is the best internet option for the area? I have cable here. Vastly overpriced, but the only thing the apartment allows.
Even if I do have to pack, I wish move time would come sooner.

Nightbird, wait till you see the fireflies dancing across the lawn in the evenings!

You pretty much have just one option for internet that I am aware of, but it is better than what I had in Tulsa. The company is called Suddenlink (they have a website). You can get cable, internet and phone all in a bundle for about $120 a month. I am not positive on the rates, I only have internet with the,. My phone is Vonage and my tv is Dish... just my pref's.
The ppl here are amazing. Especially if you are friendly to them.

I may have been the lady on the phone LOL
I'm glad that Dish is available there. I would have had them here long ago if the apt allowed the dishes... they have to be set up there they do not touch the building and now all the stuff on walkways has to be removed, so its inside the apt or not at all.
I'm going to check with AT&T about dsl too. There I do want a real land line.
Just a little over a month to go. Now I need to find a company that rents cargo vans for long distance or we come in a half or more empty 14 ft truck ;-(
I'm counting the days for the last trip out the gate here.
Check with the POD people. I think they will pick up and deliver a container and you fill it up and empty it.
