I missed the Waurika round-up. It rained that week-end.

I changed the snake pics to links, for the squeamish and phobic types.

Individuals killing them for food and survival I have no problem with GP. I just don't find it right to go out and kill hundreds or even thousands of these animals for enjoyment.

Sure, they may fry them up and eat them, but I think a large part of their enjoyment comes from the killing.

Better snakes than a lot of things I can think of.

First, the hunts do not accept snakes that are dead or gassed. they are all alive when they arrive at the snake hunt judges stand. What they do with them then I don't know.......will Google that now....nope, no indication as to what the excess ones are used for. One of the products of a rattle snake hunt is venom for the production of antivenin. There is a market for snakeskin belts, wallets, hatbands etc as well. I cannot imagine small ones have much value, either for food or for skins. I also think that if there is a serious shortage in an area the hunters will return smaller ones back to the wild.

Frankly the enjoyment has nothing to do with killing....more of a "not getting killed" thrill.

Synopsis,

I don't know if you have ever been to a roundup but the killing part isn't really fun. They have guys in a back room that are basically like factory workers and they just bring snakes back to them and they do it assembly-line style. From what I saw, the killing part wasn't "enjoyable" for the workers.

I'm sure the hunt is lots of fun for the contestants, though.
