Had a dream of rockin in my moms chair on a front porch and there was a snake coiled up next to me also enjoying the sunshine. I knew when I woke up I would be ok....
It was a funny day, but last summer, Schousse's mum was visiting from Europe, and she delighted in putting a comfortable rocking chair on the back patio and reading in the warm Oklahoma springtime. Mid morning our oldest Jack Russell started doing his warning bark. So Schousse and I went out to see what was happening, and he had a Copperhead sort of backed into a corner. As it was just a very few feet from the house, I killed it.....can't have Copperheads playing around where the dogs and grand kids play......
Her mum was sitting in the chair on the patio looking out at the field where we kept our cows and she called Schousse over "Isn't that a new calf?" They walked over to the fence and sure enough, we had a brand new heifer walking around out there......still wet from birth.
While they were looking at it, the Jack Russell started his warning bark again.......this time on the rear patio. We went over and a large grass snake was slithering over to where the rocker was. I kicked it out to the yard and the Jack Russell went after it, shaking and killing it.
For some reason mum didn't sit out there the rest of her stay with us.......guess she didn't like seen calves born or something........
Oh funny! Are you trying to scare me? Guess I will have to learn to shoot. (and I will)...Last fall I heard hoofbeats in the early morning hours of darkness, so I quickly got out of bed and ran out side in my pj's and barefoot and I remember thinking bet I could not do this in OK. Turned out the hoofbeats was just a moose and not any of the horses. Loved seeing the moose, will miss the wildlife here and as boyfriend says,no more lobster or steamers, fresh maine shrimp.(he's trying to get me to change my mind) So I hope to find other local foods in OK.
You do that, you will have more fellas knocking on your door than you can count........

Why not? In fact I did it last Sunday when it was 75 outside......except I don't wear pj's..........

We have some wildlife here, so it isn't all bad......I do understand missing the grandeur of a moose, the howl of a wolf, or the cry of a Loon. When I lived in northern Ontario I got used to the deep woods wildlife......we don't have quite as much of the neat stuff here, but what we have is pretty decent.......and you do realize that Oklahoma has more horses than any other state on a per capita basis, and is 4th in the nation in total equine population? (behind Texas, California and Florida)

We get that stuff here, it is just a lot more expensive (Fed Ex charges a lot)......but I know of two fish markets in Tulsa that have stuff flown in daily from the coasts........all of them, not just the overfished north east coast.

We do have local foods that are great...calf fries, great steaks (buffalo, beef and pork), lots of wild and specialty stuff.........we are also midway from everywhere in the US, so we get, not just fresh seafood from the coasts, but crawdads and other cajun foods, we are close to New Mexico so our tex-mex is great, we are one of the great barbeque states....about the only thing not that good around here is tofu stuff......not a lot of vegan places, although most of the Indian, Thai, and Vietnamese restaurants have vegan menus.
Love barbeque, texmex and cajun. Really love the hot and spicy. Tobasco goes on everything at my house. The docs I work for said I could not leave until the two very large bottles of red hot sauce was gone. Well I am almost done the 2nd bottle and the doc plans on going to BJ's to get more. I also chose OK because of the horses and I plan on doing alot of riding...DAILY!
OMG....what a loaded question!!!! I love my boyfriend but other peoples needs always come in first. (family) Sometimes I need to come in first. I know mentally and physically I can not deal with Maine winters much longer. I will be 50 in august and I am thinking where do I want to spend the rest of my life. It's not here freezing, don't want to do this when I'm 60. As far as the horses they depend on me. I do not want to sell and wonder if they made it to a can of dog food,or worse yet neglected abused. So...warmer weather,my horses in OK with or w/o the boyfriend, his choice. At my age I will start putting myself first. BJ's is a buy by bulk store for cheap.
If you are a true horse person, you need to be in my neighborhood........
One of our neighbors is a horse trainer and takes in rescues all the time.......you and her would get along really well. There is 10 acres next door for sale with a nice house for under $85,000.....you could keep four horses on that, with supplemental feed, pretty easy. Our local vet (large animal) does house calls for $35. The local animal chiropractor (he does bucking bulls, cutting and barrel horses) charges $40.
As far as being cold, right now it is 12 degrees outside........I am looking forward to the 55+ coming on Christmas day.
Goodpasture,I was replying and the page went blank. I am not computer literate. Thanks for the laugh my boyfriends face got all contorted when I mentioned the something sweet teaching me how to shoot. His reply I'll teach you. Ha,Ha. Your neighborhood sounds great. I used to do racehorse rescue work. Last horse left this past spring. The economy has ended that. Hay is 5.00 a bale, shaving 4.20. Why did you feel the need to run out of your home early in the a.m.?
If I don't get a chance to talk,Merry Christmas!
Thank you, nice to know there are friendly people in OK. Be coming our January or Feb,need to clear it work and what works best everyone.

Merry Christmas to you too, krisk. Yes, Oklahoma is FULL of friendly people. Just about this time last year, I was planning my move here from NJ, and talking to all these great people certainly helped ease the transition. DH and I even got to meet some of them after we arrived.

At 60, sometimes I will be replying and my mind will go blank.......computer literacy has nothing to do with it............

Barned horse hay here is about $30 a bale here. But that is for one of those 750 pound round bales. Not sure what it is in the small bales. We picked up some decent cow hay for $3.50 the other day......

I went out to make sure the house dogs didn't do their thing in the house and didn't bother getting dressed. We picked up a rescue border collie the other day, and I am still not sure she knows where "home" is....she's had several over the past three years. I also want to make sure she knows to leave the chickens alone.....they don't need herding.
