Wink Information about Fort Sill,OK needed

Hello, my name is Sammy. My husband is infantry and we are thinking about requesting Ft Sill. As of now and for another year we are stationed at Ft Lewis in WA. I am from the South and would love to find a warmer and dryer place to call home. It is Sept and we are moving into our rainy season which means it may not stop until next May! We are curious about the housing situation there. For a 1/4 of a mill here you can buy close to 1800 sqf with a yard on the side which you could mow with a weed eater. Are the roads congested with traffic there? Which cites/towns could you buy a house that has a yard and where you could feel safe living? My husband is only interested in newer homes. He doesn't want to buy someone else's secrets or misfortune. Is winter bad? I am not a winter driver at all. I usually park until they salt roads and it becomes mush! Here they don't salt the roads on post. You are on your own! How is the economy and employment outlook? And now for a silly question to some, are snakes a big problem there? Before we put in a request we wanted to know from people who live there what it is like. What they like and hate about the Ft Sill area because no one knows an area like the people who live there. Where do you go for fun? What is the base like? Is it expensive to live there? Who hates it and why? Who loves it and why? I would appreciate any responses to any questions/ thank you in advance. Have a great day everyone!!!

I would love to help ya! But, the last time I served at Ft. Sill, it was back in 1979 til 1982. You may want to ask LadyRobyn for help, she's great with Sill info.

Hi Sammy.
Okay I'll try to answer most questions. Ft. Sill is a very very nice base. But this is not coming from and army girl. I've been on post quite a few times and the housing is beautiful. Lawton, OK is the neighbor. That's where I am. Crime rate and very high and it can get a bit "ghetto" lol. It's not bad for most people but for me I'm not real use to it. We just recently had our 4wheeler stolen, and our cars have gotten broken into IN OUR DRIVEWAY 3 times. I live in a nicer neighborhood, but older houses. The winters here vary. Last winter we maybe had one freeze but the year before that it was crazy bad, ice everywhere for weeks. But normally is about medium, not much snow just ice.

Snakes. Haha. Funny you mention that. You won't have a problem with snakes normally. If you go out to the wildlife refuge about 15 mins from here there are rattle snakes and you need to be careful. My husbands been struck at twice. But we've been there a gazillion times.

Not a very expensive town to live in. Right now it's a buyers market that's for sure. The economy is not doing fabulous at the moment but it's like that everywhere. It'll pick back up. Traffic isn't bad. Ummm we bought our house that was built in the 40's. About 1200sq ft very large lot complete remodle for 60k. My inlaws bought a newer home in a great neighborhood don't know the sq. 3bed 2bath, smaller yard 2 car garage for 120k. I'm thinking 1800k. A ton of military are in and out of their neighborhood.

Overall it's not a bad place to live in, but for me I hate it... We're planning on leaving for CO in a year or so.

Hope I answered all your questions!
