We are a mid 30s gay couple, just moved to Muskogee,Oklahoma. What is the acceptance level around the area like and is there any place in town that is gay friendly to hang out or socialize? Is this a dangerous place for gays?

Hi!

I am not from Muskogee but I am positive that you are not in any danger as a gay couple. I don't know about any gay hang-outs, but then I am so anti-social that I woudn't know of any straight ones either.

Although you are always welcome to come and socialize at out house ...... about 80 miles from you.

Common sense tells me that gay couples tend to be welcomed as ok in Oklahoma as long as they don't show public affection or have gay symbols on their cars and homes.

I'd second StillwaterTownie, I know a few gay folks that live in small towns around here and generally life is just fine for them. I know one who is a fire chief and another couple who are upstanding members of the community. The biggest thing is to prove that you are good people with good values and a sense of family and community and we will accept you. But just like I don't want to see the highschoolers sucking each others lips off on Main St. that rule applies to everyone. If you are going to run around town and be obnoxious and push your choices in other peoples faces, prepare for a backlash, but common sense and tactfullness would tell me you wouldn't do that. Just be good people and if people can't handle it that is there own deal, overall I think us Okies are a very accepting and welcoming bunch. Welcome to the state!
