Texas wants your water
Quote:
A Texas water district sued the state of Oklahoma today, claiming a moratorium on out-of-state water sales violates interstate commerce law.
The Tarrant Regional Water District, serving 11 counties in north-central Texas, wants a federal judge in Oklahoma City to prevent the Oklahoma Water Resources Board from enforcing the moratorium, which legislators first enacted in 2002 and later extended until completion of a comprehensive water plan.

Seems like it would be easier and more cost-effective for TX to figure out how to store all the rain they get from tropical storms and hurricanes, and create some kind of ecologically and economically sound methods of desalinizing sea water. There's certainly a lot of it available in the Gulf, and it would not have to be purchased from any other states. In fact, they could probably end up being a seller, rather than a customer buying. Just my opinion, of course.

There was a big thing in Eufaula a couple of years ago when the lake level was so low. The Corp of Engineers was selling water to TX AND at the same time letting water through the dam to product electricity to sell to CO? or somewhere else. Interested citizens in Eufaula and surrounding area got all up in arms about it and got it basically stopped. It is amazing that we will cut our own throats at home to sell our resources to other states.

There are some schools of thought that feel water may become a tradeable commodity at some point in the near future.

There was also some talk some years ago about AK selling ice bergs that had calved off glaciers in Southeast AK to some company in Seattle. I never heard what happened, if anything, though. It would seem like there are plenty of bergs around Antarctica now to do the same thing. It's a matter of towing them and having them received and treated before they melt in warmer waters.

There have been lawsuits back and forth between California and Arizona over colorado river water and Mexico wants to get a bigger gulp too. Northern California has constantly tried to limit the amount of water send to southern california (its only a political thing that they are all one state). I believe other states have had disputes that ended up in federal court.
Water is something everyone needs and it may well be the next oil. From catching rain and treating wastewater where it can be fed back into the water table safely to other ways we must start to save what we have. Native plants that don't need to be watered, and watering systems like buried drip irrigation for gardens save too. Lots of options...
The difference with oil and water is in the end you die without the latter.
