One thing I learned a long long time ago..................never superimpose another place on where you are now. If you expect certain things because you've always had those things, you are certain to be disappointed and unhappy. Did you know, that in the time I spent in Scotland, England, Ireland, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Turkey, Norway or north Africa, I NEVER once found a rodeo? I couldn't even find someone who "used" to rope, and no one even knew what bulldogging was! Can you imagine that? Two continents where they have NO idea what a Tony Lama is or a Stetson.......where sporting shops don't carry a small arsenal of rifles, shotguns and handguns?

Once I got over the comparisons to home, I found most of Europe warm, friendly, and totally fun and enchanting.......except, when I was over there, I was 6'4", 230 lbs, wore riding boots (Tony Lamas), a Stetson (20x beaver), Wrangler jeans, a wrangler jacket, and all my shirts had pearl snaps.........people seemed to look at me funny, a lot. I recall standing in a train station and a kid was pointing and saying something to his mom.......guess he hadn't seen an Okie before......only word I understood was "Texas" ........if he had been 20 years older he and I would have had words.......

If you are looking for something similar to Glasgow, try Halifax. When you get to Oklahoma, enjoy the beef, the pork, the poultry, unless it is catfish, probably shouldn't order much fish....it comes from a long long way away.

Hope you find things to enjoy here.......I know a lot of people who have a lot of fun in this part of the world.

PS: I hope you understand that everything I say should be taken with a grain of salt? Holding your nose makes it go down better too.......
I must confess, I have a wool cowboy hat and the boots. Alot of people here are starting to wear the boots. I love the look.

Even if Tulsa or OKC are not similar in any way to Glasgow I do hope that they have bars, restaurants and places to walk. I hate to drive everywhere being from Scotland. You can walk to Paisley or Glasgow from here lol.

Have you been to Mallorca? I love it there, its my favourite place to vacation.

What area's, suburbs, towns are nice to live in that are quite close to the cities?

Thanks for your advice

I have to agree. I was driving yesterday south on I-35 going past the capital building and my wife (from Chandler) commented on how OKC really isnt brown and dirty. In fact she said it seemed to have pretty trees and small rolling hills. It makes me happy that she has been slowly changing her mind about OKCs image.

It's you green country people that bring down the rest of the state. You keep being the Boston and we'll keep being the New York. It works for me and sounds like it works for you as well.

The cities are 100 miles apart and in the same state, there is no reason for the animosity.

Hey, let's not bash here. OkC is a FINE city that has a LOT to offer. I could live in OkC and be VERY happy. An NBA team, a downtown that is in the middle of a renaissance, and great people to boot.

OkC's leadership has shown that it has what it takes to be a great place to live with TONS to offer.

As far as Tulsa having a lot of pubs/clubs Scotslass, I guess that depends. It certainly won't be like Scotland, but you'll find plenty of places to hang out.

As for walkable, it's nowhere NEAR as walkable as European cities, but certain areas (Brookside, etc) are very walkable.

Good luck on your stay in Oklahoma!

There is no reason for the animosity, I agree Nameless. Two sides of the same coin if you ask me (OkC and Tulsa).

Go Thunder!

Most areas are drivable. Some areas are walkable once you get there.

Sheesh nameless, develop a sense of humor........if I didn't have OKC to pick on who would I have? Wichita? Joplin? Little Rock? .........talk about making fun of the defenseless........

FWIW, I want everyone to understand that I have three things to say about the city controversy.......

1) Oklahoma City is a great city with a lot to offer.
2) Tulsa is just as great, in my opinion, with lots of, although different, things to offer.
3) I live in the country and would rather not have to visit either one any more than I have to.

I agree. That's why I didn't answer the poll. It's purely subjective. That's like asking which is better: blondes or brunettes and you are married to a redhead with dandruff.

We don't go to Tulsa as much as we go to OKC, but then we rarely ever go to McAlester, and yet we are equal distance to all three. I kind of think Norman is the best, although we do more business/fun trips to Shawnee than all other cities combined.
