Information about Keyes, Olka.
In the middle 1920's, My Father and Mother moved to Keyes from Elkhart, Ks. as a young married couple. My Mother ran the Beatrice Creamery and my Father had a butcher shop and ran the grain elevator. Mr. Keyes told the town,"The first baby born here will receive a five dollar gold piece and be named the Sweetheart of Keyes".July 6, 1926, I was the first baby, Mother said it was a race between her and a Black Lady. I came first. Mother said I never recieved the gold piece and I am wondering if my name is in Keyes History??? They left there after the stock market crash in '29 Mother said all their money was in three different accounts in the bank. Daddy, not realizing the crash had happened, tried to write a check to a customer, and the man told him what had happened. They had nothing left!!! I am now 80 years old and we are planning on going thru Keyes on our final trip in May.2007. I was wanting to know if someone could tell me where on Main St.the old creamery was? I was very small, but can remember my sister coming in the back door from .grade school (We lived in the back of the creamery). If anyone knows ,I would appreciate this information. Keyes visit
You indicated you planned to visit Keyes in May 2007. Did you go there?
My gr-grandfather was living in Golf (no longer there) in 1908 when he lost a leg hopping a train to go see a patient. He died and was buried in Texhoma (for what reason?) in May of that year.
I plan to go to this area in the last of August. I was born in Gate. My grandfather homesteaded there in 1908 and moved in the "dirty thirties" to Amorita, then Carmen, where he is buried (1955). I am rather circling this area for a few days.
I am eager to hear of your search. I see that Keyes was once called Willowbar---until 1926.

Keyes
Two people in Keyes that can help you with your search. Ester Iseral and Richard Gardner. I grew up in Keyes, but many years after you were there.
My step-dad Art Harryman could of given you a lot of information about the town, but he passed away in 2007.
Ask anyone and they will direct you to Ester or Richard.
