Default Tornados anyone?

Well, I was born in Stillwater, but was raised in California. I am considering attending OSU. Every post I have read is either tornado chasing talk or positive things about the town itself...Well, what about both? How many tornados happen in or near Stillwater? Is it safe to drive on open hwy during 'the season'? Do they do drills in schools like us calis do earthquake drills? How many shelters are there and what do you do if one hits at night? Has one ever hit the town before?
Other than that, I have the standard questions anyone would have before a move...Crime? Weather? (I have a little girl) so how are the schools? Good scenery or trees?

Thank for any answers! I can get kind of paranoid, so I am not sure I can handle the tornado thing....

Dont be too paranoid of tornadoes. No matter what state, what part of the country you live in, what city, there will always be some issues of some type. And its not like tornadoes happen on a daily basis. People talk about the quakes we have here in Calif...but geeze, I hate when they downgrade us 'just because' of these quakes. Housing and businesses that are built in areas that are prone to flooding, tornadoes, quakes, whatever, are usually built accordingly to prepare for these things. Cellars, steel framing, raised foundations. The more people talk about how 'bad' the midwest is because of the tornadoes, the more I want to go live out there just 'because'. Nothing wrong with being prepared though, for any emergency. Most neighbourhood usually have basements and/or shelters out there. I know people near OKC.
Keeping in mind though, that its the bigger cities that these people live in and they say they are 'nice, nothing ever happens here', that are going to be more primary targets for a sudden war, too, if someone decides to just come invade the US.
I think Muskogee and Eufalua areas are really nice. Very impressive.

These posts are hilarious! Everyone outside of our area apparently think we are constantly dodging tornadoes! Us Okies could have the same vision of California with earth quakes, how do you drive on those freeways with all those earth quakes every day!

Thanks for the input, thats been my point exactly! I love Oklahoma, its so serene in many areas, so pretty. Oops, I feel another quake hitting right now. Not to worry, its only a 4-point-er and its only our 3rd one today, lol. (Just a bit of sarcasm here!)

PanhandleOkie is on a distinguished road
The tornadoes here are ridiculous, I walked outside yesterday and whoosh, there went my car. So I went back inside to call the insurance company and got a recording saying they had been wiped out the day before! I don't know if I can handle anymore of it..gotta head to the basement I see another one coming!

LOL..tornadoes should be the last of your worries when thinking about moving to Oklahoma.

What a bunch of wussies.......I don't take shelter anytime.

If it is an F-1 to and F-3 I just go to the other side of the house......I've only had to replace the roof twice last year, and one car......the roof landed on it. If it is an F-4 or F-5 I simply wait till I see it, get in the car and drive the other way.

Stillwater is a nice town, I moved here a year ago and enjoy it so far. It seems to be growing and having a stable employer like OSU is good for a community. Havent had any tornados, but they are not uncommon in Oklahoma it seems. I worry more about hail when my car is outside.
