Why even be concerned what political viewpoint a state or a location that you might consider living has?? All that matters is how your views are, don't let anyone influence that! I live in Oklahoma and I'm an independent. I don't let any right wing republican or left wing democrat sway my decision either way. That is why I never have figured out why anyone would classify themselves as either republican or democrat, when you do that you've already made up your mind on how you would view/vote on issues. That my friends is being ignorant!! Every issue you should weigh all the facts and make a sound logical decision on those facts, quite simple!

Hi, docgary2, I am a Libertarian also. I am a moderate Libertarian though, I think we need some government.
I'm not really sure what people mean when they ask if there are liberal areas. Are there areas where the majority of people won't vote Republican in the next presidential election? I don't think so, and I would be shocked if Oklahoma didn't vote Republican next November, just like they have for years and years.
The west coast of the U.S. is supposed to be very liberal, but when I visit out there I feel oppressed by all their rules and nonacceptance of different ways of thinking. When I am in Oklahoma I feel like I have more freedom to do and think what I want.
It is a long way from Hong Kong to Tahlequah. If you are interested in Cherokee culture, that is the place to be.

Peggy, it's pretty much the same on the east coast as well. NJ is a liberal state, but they have more government regulations than you could ever imagine. And every regulation takes money out of your pocket and puts it into the pockets of the politicians or their friends. NJ also has a strong "redistribution of income" attitude. And since NJ has so many very, very rich people, and so many very, very poor, it makes for a very interesting political arena.

Peggy, I'd love to bounce some rep your way, but unfortunately I have to "spread some reputation" before giving you any more.
You and ColleenG are onto something here. Briansgi, it's a nice idea in theory to just believe what you believe, and feel free to express your views, but it's not always that easy in some parts of the country. Here in MA, I know people with libertarian and/or conservative views who have told me they are really hesitant to express their views if they're not sure they're talking to someone open to hearing them, because there's so much intolerance of anything but elitist latte liberal views that these folks are truly concerned about the possibility of being socially ostracized and/or having their career progress undermined if the wrong person learns of their views.
Maybe it's like that in some areas if your views aren't conservtive enough. I don't know. I haven't spent enough time in really red states to have a good feel for this. If it is like this in some places, I'd still say the west coast and Northeast brand of intolerant "liberalism" is worse, since at least the uber conservatives don't compound their narrowness with the hypocrisy of walking around with their noses in the air over how "open-minded" and "tolerant" and "enlightened" they supposedly are. Still, it could be difficult on the social and career fronts to be "too liberal" in such a place, as it is for some people who are "too conservative" in MA.
All of this being said, you know, except for factual information I've read, basically all I know about Oklahoma is what I see on this forum. Not just on this thread but in the forum overall, I keep getting the impression that Oklahomans for the most part show a laid-back but genuine tolerance for varying views, as long as others show them the same courtesy. Yet another reason that OK really seems like an OK place.
