You know, let me apologize to Jessaka right quick. I know there are definition barriers I have to learn when I move and this is probably a prime example. When someone mentions Liberal out here, we usually associate it with Berkley, CA where they denounce everything and try to kick the recruiting offices out. Jessaka was right in the true sense that Liberal - Libertarian - has a more free outlook. So, I concur that there are different definitions. Jessaka, sorry.Name: AddEmoticons04279.gif

Massachusetts, like most of the northeastern states are high stress, overcrowded, overtaxed, overpopulated and overpriced big time. If you call that a better living than OK, you DO have to be kidding!!!

Um, I LIVE in MA. Lived there most of my life. I'll have to be the third to say, you've got to be kdding!

NO WAY AM I KIDDING!! Unlike you and a lot of people, I have spent a long time studying statistics dealing with the quality of life in the various states and it was very easy to conclude that states with higher taxes coincide with a higher quality of living than in Oklahoma. For instance, Massachusetts is rated one of the healthiest states in the union while Oklahoma is one of the least healthiest. All New England states rate as better places to live than Oklahoma. There's fewer unmarried teen pregnancies. The death rate is lower in those states. The suicide rates are lower. There's fewer fatal traffic accidents. There's not as much public corruption. All this doesn't come from such states having lower taxes than Oklahoma. They are higher. But statistics aren't everything. Life is how you make it. If life is hell in New England, you leave it behind. If life is hell for you in Oklahoma, you leave.

And you've never heard of "Lies, damned lies, and statistics"? I don't care what the statistics say, you'd have to use a team of horses to get me anywhere near the eastern seaboard!

Why even be concerned what political viewpoint a state or a location that you might consider living has?? All that matters is how your views are, don't let anyone influence that! I live in Oklahoma and I'm an independent. I don't let any right wing republican or left wing democrat sway my decision either way. That is why I never have figured out why anyone would classify themselves as either republican or democrat, when you do that you've already made up your mind on how you would view/vote on issues. That my friends is being ignorant!! Every issue you should weigh all the facts and make a sound logical decision on those facts, quite simple!

Hi, docgary2, I am a Libertarian also. I am a moderate Libertarian though, I think we need some government.

I'm not really sure what people mean when they ask if there are liberal areas. Are there areas where the majority of people won't vote Republican in the next presidential election? I don't think so, and I would be shocked if Oklahoma didn't vote Republican next November, just like they have for years and years.

The west coast of the U.S. is supposed to be very liberal, but when I visit out there I feel oppressed by all their rules and nonacceptance of different ways of thinking. When I am in Oklahoma I feel like I have more freedom to do and think what I want.

It is a long way from Hong Kong to Tahlequah. If you are interested in Cherokee culture, that is the place to be.

Peggy, it's pretty much the same on the east coast as well. NJ is a liberal state, but they have more government regulations than you could ever imagine. And every regulation takes money out of your pocket and puts it into the pockets of the politicians or their friends. NJ also has a strong "redistribution of income" attitude. And since NJ has so many very, very rich people, and so many very, very poor, it makes for a very interesting political arena.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Peggy, I'd love to bounce some rep your way, but unfortunately I have to "spread some reputation" before giving you any more.

You and ColleenG are onto something here. Briansgi, it's a nice idea in theory to just believe what you believe, and feel free to express your views, but it's not always that easy in some parts of the country. Here in MA, I know people with libertarian and/or conservative views who have told me they are really hesitant to express their views if they're not sure they're talking to someone open to hearing them, because there's so much intolerance of anything but elitist latte liberal views that these folks are truly concerned about the possibility of being socially ostracized and/or having their career progress undermined if the wrong person learns of their views.

Maybe it's like that in some areas if your views aren't conservtive enough. I don't know. I haven't spent enough time in really red states to have a good feel for this. If it is like this in some places, I'd still say the west coast and Northeast brand of intolerant "liberalism" is worse, since at least the uber conservatives don't compound their narrowness with the hypocrisy of walking around with their noses in the air over how "open-minded" and "tolerant" and "enlightened" they supposedly are. Still, it could be difficult on the social and career fronts to be "too liberal" in such a place, as it is for some people who are "too conservative" in MA.

All of this being said, you know, except for factual information I've read, basically all I know about Oklahoma is what I see on this forum. Not just on this thread but in the forum overall, I keep getting the impression that Oklahomans for the most part show a laid-back but genuine tolerance for varying views, as long as others show them the same courtesy. Yet another reason that OK really seems like an OK place.

What's so bad and far out wrong about the eastern seaboard? Was New York City one heck of a scary place?

Not my cuppa tea. After spending 30+ years in rural Alaska, I don't think it would like me any more than I'd like it. And I grew up in a major city, so I do know what cities are like. <<<shudders>>>
