the Austin of Oklahoma?
I don't count myself as a 'Liberal' but a 'Libertarian'
ie Libertarian party and I often read lewrockwell.com
My hesitancy to get involved with Repubs and Dems is
largely due to the scandals and hypocricy that goes
up in the upper echelon of Washington.
I have seriously considered Talequah as a place to settle
down, but wonder if I would fit in after being an ex pat
for so many years, especially after living in China/Hong Kong
and Taiwan, having learned Mandarin and finding Asian customs
and ideas regarding 'being liberal' quite different than
the thoughts of my own countrymen.
Any thoughts or comments are certainly appreciated. I am interested
in Cherokee and Native American customs due to my work as a
healer (homoeopathic, herbs) and interest in Chinese Medicine.
I am also from Texas and am searching for the 'Austin' of Oklahoma.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Why even be concerned what political viewpoint a state or a location that you might consider living has?? All that matters is how your views are, don't let anyone influence that! I live in Oklahoma and I'm an independent. I don't let any right wing republican or left wing democrat sway my decision either way. That is why I never have figured out why anyone would classify themselves as either republican or democrat, when you do that you've already made up your mind on how you would view/vote on issues. That my friends is being ignorant!! Every issue you should weigh all the facts and make a sound logical decision on those facts, quite simple!

Hi, docgary2, I am a Libertarian also. I am a moderate Libertarian though, I think we need some government.
I'm not really sure what people mean when they ask if there are liberal areas. Are there areas where the majority of people won't vote Republican in the next presidential election? I don't think so, and I would be shocked if Oklahoma didn't vote Republican next November, just like they have for years and years.
The west coast of the U.S. is supposed to be very liberal, but when I visit out there I feel oppressed by all their rules and nonacceptance of different ways of thinking. When I am in Oklahoma I feel like I have more freedom to do and think what I want.
It is a long way from Hong Kong to Tahlequah. If you are interested in Cherokee culture, that is the place to be.

I live in Tahlequah. I consider myself a libertarian. I registered as an independant. I have not thought of patriotism in years. I prefer to consider the world as my home.
There are a lot of republicans and democrats here. I have found that I don't bother to get into discussions with those that don't have my views, and so I just listen to people if they talk politics or religion. I no longer have a need to prove them wrong or to engage in those kinds of conversations unless I know that it won't cause hurtful feelings.
But you can find many opened minded people here that go to the Unitarian Church or to other clubs. We have a college here that has a lot of opened minded people in them as well. I had fear of fitting in when I first moved here, but I found my nitch. But it doesn't happen to be any church, by the way.
We also have an herbalist and accupuncturist here as well as chiropractors.
And this is the best place if you are interested in Cherokees and their customs.
Might be a little boring after having lived in China though. LOL.

Peggy, it's pretty much the same on the east coast as well. NJ is a liberal state, but they have more government regulations than you could ever imagine. And every regulation takes money out of your pocket and puts it into the pockets of the politicians or their friends. NJ also has a strong "redistribution of income" attitude. And since NJ has so many very, very rich people, and so many very, very poor, it makes for a very interesting political arena.

You guys are starting to scare me about Liberal talk in OK. If people want Liberal, they should move to CA, they'll love it. I read somewhere that there was a bumper sticker that said "Don't Edmond my Norman", there should be one for "Don't CA my OK". Off subject but why do they say Liberal and Democratic when it's borderline communist or socialist? I thought it was "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country." JFK (D) - Enough politics, the subject bores me to no end.

While I would love to have universal health care for our country, I am not a communist or a socialist. I hated California by the way. I understand that politics bores you, which could be the problem here, because if you read about libertarianism you would see that it is not anywhere near communism or socialism. Even liberals are not anything like communists. Communism and socialism takes away freedom; I believe in a democratic government. I would love my country to get back to what it was meant to be before the Bush administration took office.

Compared to the southern states around us, Oklahoma is very "liberal". You'll find that many rural areas are predominently Democrat and even those who are Republicans are quite open minded about things around here.

I am not sure what the "Austin of OK" means, but if it is Austin you are interested in, why just not move there?
