Ivy Leaguer moving to Oklahoma
Hey all, got a question for you all. My girlfriend is going to attend graduate school at OU. I am graduating this upcoming summer from Columbia University. How will a master's degree in business play in Oklahoma?
I want to work in the sports and entertainment industry, primarily in facility/event management.
Thanks!

Since I don't live there, you are welcome to discard my .02 that I will spew...However, I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

My thought here is: A master's in OK is probably the same as anywhere else. But, what do I know.
I had some experience in the party rental biz in the Ffld County to NYC corridor. I would research how many "big" tent rental businesses there are in OKC area and try and find out how busy they are since the entertainment/facililty/event management industry was generally the largest segment of our local tent rental businesses. The correlation of rentals for tables, chairs, etc. was in direct proportion to the number of events in the area. You may also get some valuable info by calling the local hotels and other venues...eh, you probably already did that...sorry to be redundant---again.
BTW, shouldn't your name be ColumbiaSooner09?

Your Masters degree won't hurt you over here, ... on the other hand it won't help you either. In general education is not valued highly over here (not that it's valued that much elsewhere, but here it's a little worse).

I beg to differ. I work in the State Department of Libraries. Of the 8 people in my department, 4 have Master's Degrees, 2 have a BA, and one an AA.

I've found most broad statements like this are wrong.
If what you are doing requires education, then you need the best education in that field you can find. If what you are doing doesn't require education......never mind, everything requires education. I wouldn't hire a fence post driver unless he had a basic knowledge of fencing.
But if you have a degree in computer science, and you are wanting to sell furniture on commission, chances are your degree would be an impediment. But if you have considerable knowledge about selling furniture and you want to be a computer tech, get a degree in it first.

With 80 odd casinos in Oklahoma, I would say your degree would be well-suited for that type of work. When I worked at a casino, there was a young lad who had just graduated and his job was a blast. The only drawback is seeing as how you are from the "upper crust" east coast, I would think you would most likely turn your nose up, if not laugh out loud, at the low wages most casinos pay. This IS Oklahoma, not Vegas.
Of course, you could try working for the Thunder.
I have to agree with GP about degrees. Count yourself lucky if your Master's puts you in the field of your choice.
Good luck to you and your gf.
