On The Road
Does anyone else love being on the road ?
I have driven across the country five times and loved it. I drove from the Atlantic to the Pacific each time and feel like I miss the road at times.
A couple of observations about areas,
Nicest people, as I was driving through Oklahoma my Suburban was leaking water in the hot summer and I was looking at the truck at a gas station and noticed another guy watching me and I felt like he should mind his own business,{I lived near DC at the time} I went into the gas station to buy drinks and maybe get water to put in the truck air conditioning system and when I came out who was under my truck looking at it ? that same guy, I was stunned and didn't know if I should should yell at him or what, I kept my mouth shut and he crawled out and said nothing was wrong with my truck it was just hot and he then told me he worked for a GM plant nearby and built these trucks, he could not have been any nicer. Had a nice conversation. Coming from the DC area where you brace for crime if someone is watching you I was truly stunned and realized I didn't want to live in the DC area .
Gruene Texas, fun , nice people and great music. I had planned on stopping by and checking it out for a day. Stayed three days and could still be there. Very cool spot.

Gruene is a really cool place. I have to say, I hate being on the road! I get way too antsy in the car!

Cool story! Yeah I definatley notice in other places what goes for as nice and almost required manners in Oklahoma is met with weird looks and almost rudeness from other people. I remember I went up north to see family (Illinois of all places) and we were at a restaurant and I held the door open for the lady behind me and she stopped and looked at me like I was cross-eyed and said WELL WALK IN ALREADY!! I was shocked lol...where is the humanity up there...

I love being on the road, but it tires me out now that I am older. I have been to many places, but I must say that Oklahoma is the friendliest. And the most helpful to others

DH and I have traveled the county a few times ourselves. A couple of times with our kids. We always put "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson when we leave anywhere. We recently drove from NJ to OK after a stay there for Thanksgiving.
Please continue to post your cross county experiences. I enjoyed reading your post. And yes, OK does have the most helpful and friendliest people I've ever run across.

I've driven a lot of miles too, and I loved it. The longest trip was from Kodiak AK to Buffalo NY, when I took my kids to meet relatives all over the place. The worst trip was going from Kodiak to the midwest with my sister - she was absolutely sure we'd be raped and murdered along the way and was terrified at the thought of getting off the Interstate. I haven't driven in OK, because I can't drive anymore, but just about every place I've been - other than cities - people have been friendly and helpful. That has been especially true of AK and the Alcan, any time something happens along those roads someone will always stop to see if you need help. As for cities, I'd be very hesitant to stop in any of them to ask for help of any kind, unless it was a major emergency.

Hello, I too enjoyed being on the open road when I drove from here to Georgia, then onto Virginia in 2004. I this year did it again, only left here for North Carolina.
I must admit, I'm only good for 12 hours straight, in other words, taking the southern route from Oklahoma driving thru Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama then Georgia. I missed my exit in Georgia, but even if I had not of missed it, it still took another 5 hours to get to North Carolina. I was soooo sick of being on the road at that point. Then again, I didn't make any stops, just drove straight thru with my doggie, taking the occasional gas fill up and bathroom breaks, doggie included.
Arkansas has some very aggressive drivers. They don't even give you time to pull into the right hand lane. They just run up on you.
Georgia, LOL, cra-zy! You better know where you're going and which exit you need to be closest to, cuz, although Georgia drivers don't have time for play, they will let you in a lane, with your blinkers on, but, you can't take all day. Lol.
North Carolina, and South Carolina, wheww...interstate all over the road. Then again, I drove thru in the wee hours of the morning, pitch black, and during the month of May. Highway patrol were pulling people over left and right.
On my way back from North Carolina to Oklahoma, I took I40. North Cakky, Tennessee, Arkansas, and back here. I made darn sure my my mountain driving would be done during the day. The Great Smoky Mountains, talk about awesome. Driving thru that was amazing.
All in all, I enjoyed the open road, listening to the local radio stations, getting strange looks from people when you ask for directions..they're like trying to figure out where you came from..the looks are priceless..lol

I've done a road trip every summer since 2001, with the exception of 2006 (which I started, but failed to finish, no thanks to a wandering deer in Coal County). So far, about 27,000 miles, and I've visited 44 states.

I miss traveling.
My best childhood memories regard being on the road, as I always was. My father was a contractor so we would always be moving and we were lucky enough to take occasional vacations. To me, there is nothing like an awesome roadtrip.
I have never personally driven more than an hour out though, which has me wondering if when I do decide to make my big move, whether or not I'll enjoy it like my memories of being chauffeured around the country. I guess I'll find out in due time.
Regardless, being on the road is like nothing else in the world, IMO

I like traveling, seeing new places and things. I miss having a job that allowed me to travel frequently, but after a while it became a lot of work. Its nice when you have time to drive w/o a deadline...but when gas gets north of $3, I cut down on my trips.
