We sent to the Bristow horse auction last night for a little while......some awful pretty animals were going for anywhere from $25 to $400. No indication on the ones we saw about behavior or being broke or anything......they started the sale off at $0.02 a pound. The big quarter/thorough crosses were getting $0.30 a pound, and a Jack went for $0.06 a pound. He weighed in about 380, so he sold for about $20.
I didn't stay for the riding horses that came up later in the auction. So I imagine they went in the $100-$500 range.
One man there buys the per pound horses.....pays $45-$75 for a horse......has a kid come ride them a while and he advertises in the paper......sells "riding horses" for $200-$500 each. That is how he makes his living. So be cautious about buying a horse out of a paper.....they are just like used cars.....there really are a lot of lemons out there.

Is that Bristow horse auction done on a regular basis? Do you know of any others? I found a place in Mustang that has self-care boarding for $75 a month, so I'm still thinking, maybe. . . . . . .

every other Monday night. Next one is Feb 2. It runs from about 6:30 until close to midnight.
There was one pretty little paint pony that went for $85. Again, it may not have been broke, but it looked pretty sound to me.

You can also try horse rescues around the area. There are many horse rescues in Oklahoma.

Where in Bristow is it, GP? I'm assuming you need to take the horse with you at that time? I guess that would mean renting a trailer.

Thanks to everyone who posted information, including Txgal (truce?). I hope to do something soon for Anna, she's really disappointed in not being able to ride.

When you get off the Bristow Exit on I-44, you go south about a half a mile till you hit Highway 16 North. You go past the Super Wal-mart on the right, and about a mile or two further on the left. Can't miss it. If you go about 10 miles further you will find a pretty nice steakhouse (they don't serve alchohol) whre the big ticket steak is about $20 but you can get a really good burger for under $6.....It is called Joseph's and is next door to winery and some vineyards.....never mind about Joseph's......the auction is on a Monday and they are closed on Monday......but if you go on up to Drumright, turn left and go through town you an hit Freddies.....I think they are open on Mondays.

You need to take it home with you that night or the next day sometime. I would want to get it out of that kind of environment as soon as possible. Yeah, rent one if you can't borrow a trailer.
