There's a horse sale in Mt. View too. There used to be one in Sulphur but I don't know if they still have it. Be careful buying one at auction. People may ace a horse before the sale.

Acepromazine [sp?] is a horse tranquilizer. I know of a few people who have used it on dogs as well, for removing porcupine quills.

Yeah! Guy I knew in Montana had several dogs, one of which never quite got the idea that the YOWCH! came from trying to kill porcupines. He got tired of paying for the vet, so he got some Ace from the vet and did it himself. It's also easier and less painful if the ends of the quills are cut off, then they deflate a bit, but it's rather time-consuming to do them one at a time.

horse
Colleen, good luck on finding a horse. Looking is alot of fun. The cost of a horse can very depending on what you have for pasture. Bale of hay 4.50,1/2 bale per horse (depending on size of horse) 4 to 8 quarts daily for grain $12.00, a bag shavings 4.20 and our horses get 4 bags each every wk. Farrier 40 for a trim and 110.00 for shoes. The terrain in Maine is rough,we shoe every 6 to 8 wks, wormer 5.00 to 15.00 every 6 to 8 wks, equine dentist every other year 60.00 and about 100. per horse for spring time shots and coggins test. Don't think I missed anything. This is another reason why I want to move to OK,hoping I can afford more pasture for the horses so I don't have to buy hay year round. 3 out of the 4 horses will be coming with me. Chica the pony will go to some friends.
Good luck
Krisk

Thanks for the info Krisk. I can board a horse here in Mustang for about $250 a month, including food. I'm not sure horses here need shoes too much. Anna and I are going to check out the auction in Bristow GP wrote about.

Colleen, I would probably sell my horse, Doxology, if Anna would be interested in him. He's not technically "for sale" so you won't hurt my feelings if not. Just thought he might be a good horse for her and I rarely get to ride these days anyway. But, go check out the auction and if that doesn't seem like the way you want to go, let me know. Good luck!
