Default Leasing a Horse

As many of you already know, I have an almost 17year old daughter who loves to ride. The one disappointment for her since we moved here is how difficult it is to find a place to ride. She found it much easier to ride in NJ than in OK which is amazing. The closest place to where we live (Mustang) is Thunderbird Lake, which I can tell you is not close.

It will be awhile before she will be able to buy her own horse, so I'm trying to think of ways she could ride more often closer to home. Does anyone know of places where: 1) she can ride (she doesn't want/need lessons, just the opportunity to ride); or 2) someone who is interested in leasing a horse to us that she can ride at their location?

Please, please help us out. She's bugging me to go riding again this weekend, and I just dont' have the time.

I don't live in your state, but let me offer some suggestions. Leasing can be a really good idea for both sides, so I agree it's a good option. Go to feed stores in your area, most feed stores have bulletin boards. Put up a notice that you are looking for a horse to lease for your daughter, some idea of her level of experience, etc., and put your phone # on it. Look in the feed stores for some sort of free or close to free horse/livestock newspaper (many areas have them, not sure if there is one there) They usually have free ads, you can put one in there. Or, use the classified livestock ads in your regular newspaper. There are also horse marketing websites, dreamhorse, etc., (and some others I can't think of the name of right now -- you can do a search) that may have sections for people with horses for lease or looking for horses to lease. If there are boarding stables in your area, call them and see if they know of anyone.

Good luck!

EDIT: I did a google search on horses for lease Oklahoma -- here's one thing I found:

I have heard of leasing horses in other states but I don't know anyone who does it here. That doesn't mean it isn't done, I just don't know anyone that does. With the horse market in the shape it's in right now, she could get a really decent riding horse for $500 or less at a local sale.

See if you can get ahold of someone with the Mustang Round-Up Club and explain your ordeal. They will know the horse situation and places to ride in your area. A quick google search turned up the club's myspace page. www.myspace.com/mustangruc

Thanks for the suggestion, but her close friend is a member there and we already checked with them. It's not the price of the horse, but the upkeep that's keeping us from buying one now.

Having owned, been the leasee and the leasor in the past, I am following this post with interest. I wonder if there is enough of a market for those in Colleen's position. Sounds like a business opportunity.

That's what I'm thinking. I know if I had a couple of horses, I would love to have some steady income coming in for feed, vet fees, etc., and all it would cost me is having someone exericse my horse and maybe spoil it a llittle with treats and rubdowns. And Anna has no problem mucking out stalls either.

Yeh, If you have access to some nice trails or even if you could only set up a ring some shelter on your land your hobby could pay for itself; hopefully. Are Norman & OKC too far for you to draw business?
