Default ? about owning a Pit Bull Terriers

Does anyone know what the laws are in Cleveland County on owning a Pit Bull Terrier? Are they banned? Do you have to register them with the city in which you live? I know nothing on this matter and I am going to have a puppy in my home in about 5 weeks. Any help is very much appreciated!

Sorry for being too lazy to look this up but I *think* there is a state law that prohibits individual cities from putting restrictions on a breed. Any rules would have to be statewide.

You'd probably have a lot more trouble with your homeowner's insurance than any city regs. A lot of insurance companies will either refuse to insure you if you own certain breeds, or will specifically exclude them from policies.

Thank you for your help Heather and Kari! I know there isn't a state law against having a Pit Bull. But I had to make sure there wasn't a city law. xoxo I can't wait to get our puppy home!

They ask, and if they find out later you lied, your policy is cancelled, period. And word is passed around to other companies as well. I've had more than my share of hassles with insurance companies over pets [and ohter things]. It's mostly due to overwhelming litigation, and the bad raps some breeds get because of idiot owners, and sometimes the number of dogs. One policy I had excluded all of mine, in spite of the fact that they were elderly house dogs and spayed or neutered - I had 4, and that was too many. That's one of the reasons so many of the mushers in AK live in remote areas - they have too many dogs. It gets even dicier when one is renting - there have been some laws passed in the last few decades making the propery owner ultimately liable for damages due to pets, rather than the pet owner, though the property owner can sue to recover damages, if Fido bites someone. That's why in so many cities any apartments advertised as 'taking pets' mean cats only, no dogs. There was a case in AK where a park ranger, and I don't remember if he was state or federal, had family housing in a park-owned house. He was told that his wife would have to get rid of her parrot, because it might get out of it's cage and it might bite someone. They opted to rent a house in the nearest town instead.

The city of Moore tried to ban Pit Bulls but they were unsuccessful.

In Norman they are allowed but there is a two dog limit.

I have a Pit and lived in Noble. I think they have a 5 dog limit.

I don't think there's a mumber limit on dogs where I live, it's basically what you can afford to take care of and feed. Though they do have a limit on cats - no more than 14!

Says someone who hasn't lost a house + contents to a fire and had to fight for every penny they didn't want to pay off on the policy!
