Around the world in 365
I just had the greatest idea I've ever had in the history of my great ideas. Hold on to your panties.
I was reading the Sunday Oklahoman like I do every Sunday morning (I'm so old) when I should be in church when I came across this story: http://newsok.com/many-make-the-icy-plunge-at-medicine-park/article/3344273?custom_click=headlines_widget .
That got me thinking how much cool stuff goes on at cool places in the state I love that I have never even heard of. So, starting 01/01/10 (yes, I'm a planner), I am traveling Oklahoma to see the funny landmarks, hole in the wall bars and mom and pop diners that make this state great.
I would appreciate any suggestions you can give me of places I should visit. I expect to learn a lot, get tons of sweet photo-ops and have blogging material to last, well, a year.
Now, I'm off to get my calendar and plan away! YEEHAW!

Your link was rejected as spam. Speaking of mom and pop diners, go to Mom's in Stillwater. It's tucked away in a small strip mall in one of the more obscure, less traveled upon areas of town.

I think your plan sounds cool, Heather. And don't worry about missing church once in a while. What do they call that? Church of Mattress Springs? I don't know, can't remember.

It sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe you could get some sponsors, use one of those 'unadopted' wild horses from Pauls Valley, or one of those 3 wheel bikes with a cargo thingie in back, and arrange some kind of contract with a paper or magazine for photos and regular updates. Then you could spend the whole year doing that and pretty much nothing else. And there are a lot of older threads right here on the forum about favorite foods, the best this or that, favorite restaurants, etc.
And I'd like to see some pictures of Swink. I don't have any idea why that name appeals to me, it just does. But I don't think it's big enough to have a restaurant of any kind.

Well, I suppose I can live my life vicariously through HeatherDawn's Awesome Okie Adventure!
Take lots of pics! Uhm.. let's see... where can we send you.
Rattlesnake round up. That always sounded like fun and some good eatin' too. I don't know when or where it is, so I'll have to get back to you on that one.
I don't know too many hole-in-the-wall bars, and I sure as heck won't refer you to an Indian bar! But I do think if you are adventurous, you should go to at least one '49 in your life.
The big foot festival sounds good.

Fine idea!
A few personal off-the-beaten-path favorites in no particular order:
Polly & Peggy's diner, about 200 N. Grand in Enid.
Biscuit Hill restaurant on I-40 at Earlsboro.
The little shrine on US81 in Bison, south of Enid.
Lew Wentz Camp, north of Ponca. Spectacular art deco swimming pool.
Ponca's City Hall (Centennial Plaza), especially at night when the lighted fountain is running.
