Default Small Towns

If you were to move anywhere in Oklahoma but wanted a small country town where the high schools have rodeos instead of hip hop dances, where would you go? A town that has huge gatherings with a carnival and country dancing. Do those even exist anymore?

I have lived in a big cityto long and want to get back to my country roots. My husband and I are looking to move so nows my chance. We want a more wholesome life style for the kids.

Basically a Down Home type of place. And no suburbs! lol

Good luck. I never heard of a Oklahoma town where the high school put on a rodeo.

Country dancing used to be big in Stillwater when the Tumbleweed and Desperados was open every weekend. But the former is now only open for special occasions they came to be best known for, such as the Calf Fry, and the latter is long closed. Anyway, Stillwater is going for being the state's next metro city than being a country town.

How small are you talking about? I know in the area where I grew up they have a Rodeo, or at least once did. I don't know of any high schools that have rodeos.

Look around Ada; Ken Lance Rodeo is just outside of town, and is pretty popular.

You might check out Union City. It is a small town close to Mustang. Mustang is a suburb with a small town feel. It has a Western Days festival in the fall and it also has an indoor and an outdoor rodeo arena as well as a few private small ones. Also Czech Hall is north of Mustang on Czech Hall rd south of I-40. It has various dances there. www.czechhall.com You might also check out Hinton, they have rodeos and are on the PRCA tour.

Sorry, Townie, but this isn't true. The 'Weed shut down for a short period of time but reopened probably about a year ago. They are open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Grove on Grand Lake is an excellent small town. I am sure there are rodeos in the area, The one I like best is at Carthage, MO because tuesday night is kids night. They ride free in the arena while the parents sit inside and eat and have a drink at tne bar --- because the bar has an 12 foot wide window that overlooks the arena where they can watch the kids. the food is good. It was my favorite place to eat - and I don't have children or horses. The Lazy J arena is also where the Budweiseer horses are stabled every year when they come to Carthaage for the annual fall parade..

Just my two cents. from the crow's nest.

How about just over the border 10-12 mi. from Oklahoma? Just south of Durant OK near Bonham TX is the home of the largest family rodeo in the country.....the Keuckelhan family is now on its 4th generation. They have a huge indoor roping arena that is open nearly evening evening to the public, including lots of kids, to rope and ride...very wholesome family atmosphere. Lots of kids from NE TX and Southern OK come there regularly. A nearby high school, Sam Rabyrn ISD, Telephone TX sounds like the kind of school and atmosphere you're looking for (it is also academically strong.).

Bray has an arena...I think it's called SportHorse (either that or SpeedHorse). Anyway, it's privately owned and they have events there all the time. I used to team sort there.
