Lived in Houston for nearly four years (North Harris County) and while it was alright; I didn't care for the following:

1. Traffic
2. Traffic
3. Traffic
4. Humidity
5. Heat/humidity
6. Traffic
7. Smells of refineries (worse than anywhere in Tulsa)
8. Did I mention traffic?

Seriously though, it wasn't so bad until I started hearing gunshots at what I thought was a nice apartment complex. I moved within four weeks and not just within Houston, I moved back to Tulsa.

I still have many friends in Houston, but haven't been back to visit since 1997. Don't really miss it. For some people, home is where you lay your head. I guess for me it really is where the heart is.

Good lord, instead of complaining, you should be counting your blessings that you weren't living in Oklahoma during the late 1990's when they were trying to ban the magazine called Penthouse.

Meanwhile, just go to the typical places for something to do such as the zoo or a casino and so on.

Nope, a Tulsa jury decided the magazine clerk who sold Penthouse was not guilty of selling obscenity.

Sounds like the jury had to take the Penthouse into the bathroom for some special reviewing of the evidence!

I have never wanted to post in this thread because it seems a bit hostile. Never even liked the Love U.S. or leave thingies. but you know what? There are problems in Oklahoma just as there are everywhere. Even the U.S. has problems. And you don't leave, you try to fix it.

But people move here because of a job, or because they have read City Data, and they think that Oklahoma is all wonderful. They get here and find a lot of problems that were never mentioned, and they either stay or leave. People tend to think because I found racism here, or animal and/or spousal abuse that I am unhappy here and should find another place to live or whatever. I am not unhappy here, but it is unsettling when you learn what goes on in your county. But do you leave? No, you try to fix things. If I see an animal I rescue it, but I am through with trying to rescue women in abusive relationships. It is too upsetting and mostly they go back. But this happens all over, and it may seem a little worse in Cherokee Co because it is a small town, but I grew up in small towns and never had to rescue animals, but I did rescue a friend once who then went right back to her man.

But I think that people should learn to see the garbage in their neighbor's yard and deal with it. I was upset when Seabee saw the trash in Tahlequah, why? Because I love Tahlequah just as you all love Oklahoma or your own home town. Tahlequah is my home town now. But when I saw that Seabee was talking about trashy areas, I said there was worse and stated it. People then thought that I was saying that all republicans are racists. They are not. I wouldn't even want to make a guess as to how many are or aren't, not even in the democratic party. i only said that cherokee co. always voted republican, this time not. I have heard too many racist stories here to think that there is not a lot of racism in this county. i have heard good things about other towns that are not racists. but you are going to find that everywhere. at least it is nothing like living in the deep south where you hear the N word in public on a daily basis, and where people say that you need to be a card carrying member of the KKK. When I lived in Mississippi, I couldn't wait to leave, and we left due to the racism. We left Florida due to the racism. I was about to want to leave here due to the racism during the elections. But all has calmed down.

But people need to know, if they are coming from the city that they will miss the good restaurants, and the great shopping. If they live near the beach, they will miss the beaches. If they talk about missing these things they will not be liked by Oklahomans. I quit telling people that I am from CA because sometimes I got certain looks that I didn't like. And yet they always asked me.

I have said enough good things about Oklahoma, its people, and Tahlequah, but you must know that not everything is perfect. You will never find a perfect place. An example is when i lived in a small town of Creston, CA, 200 pop. I loved the people, and my husband used to go into town and come home with neat stories about the people, things he heard. Then I made a friend there that began telling me of the dirty gossip, and I didn't want to hear it. I loved these people. I backed away from her. And people do that when anything negative is said about Oklahoma. But somehow people need to know the truth, good and bad, so they can make better choices.

Mattie Jo,

Please, if your going to continue to rant on one thread to another thread that was closed, then do so without bringing my name up in it . Other than that, have at it and have fun. Everyone has said thier piece and moved on. Take care and have a nice day.

I know how ya feel, I get tired of people saying the same thing about Mississippi...I figure, if others think it's just a "horrible" place to live then for God's sake...get the hell out! Mississippi isn't the stereotypical place people think it is. Yes, it's totally different than living in NY...I personally wound't like a big city, BUT, the folks here are very nice, would give ya the shirt off their back. You can actually leave your doors unlocked and open if you wanted to and not have to worry about it.
