I lived in AK for over 30 years, and it will be a major adjustment moving here. I grew up in the midwest, so I knew all about hot summers and was prepared for them, but it still takes time to re-acclimatize. But you will also have four real seasons, not just freeze up, break up, and road construction - and spring and fall last longer than a weekend. The winters are extremely mild, comparatively speaking, and when it does get cold [like below freezing] it's usually a quick downward spike and right back up again. When it does snow or get icy, no one goes anywhere, because it doesn't happen often enough for people here to learn how to drive in it. Not that they aren't good drivers otherwise, it's just difficult to deal with something you might only have once or twice in a couple years. There are a lot of pictures of OK mountains in this forum, either in the photo sticky thread, or in one of the many 'road trip' or 'what is there to do/see' threads. The eastern/northeastern part of OK is the edge of the Ozark Mountains, but the Ozarks is a very old range and has worn way down over the millenia. Do not expect Denali or anything close to it! The people are friendly and helpful, just the way they are in small town AK, pretty much live and let live. In fact, one of my neighbors told me not long ago "The day I can't be neighborly is the day they plant me in my grave," and he meant it.

Finally made to OK
Ed and I finally made it to Ok. We did not get a chance to see everything we wanted because we had to spend a night in Chicago. (that was not pleasent). A town I liked was Talihina, loved it! Thinking maybe of staying at Horse Heaven Ranch. I will be coming back early summer to inquire about jobs, look at more houses. Kind of a tricky thing to find a job, sell my house here.
When Ed and I flew home it took us 5 hours to do a 2 hour 15 minute drive because it was snowing and we got 26 inches. Once we got to our house ,at 3:30 a.m. it took us to 5:00 a.m. to get in the house cuz we had to shovel and plow and the plow even got stuck! 8 miles from our house a fireman pulled us over and told us to park the truck to spend the night on the side of the road. He stated because the roads are to bad. Well I said NO KIDDING! We just drove 5 hours in it and we are not stopping 8 miles from our house! We turned around and found another way home. We got 3 ft of snow in 8 days.I think someone above it trying to tell me something and on that note Someone above? I have never seen so many churches in my life. OK loves church?

snow
Disregard the unhappy face that is not where I intended it to go. I wanted it by the snow and the long drive home. We really liked OK.

Glad to hear your trip here was good, even if your trip home wasn't. Sorry we didn't get to meet up, but I know your time was limited. Any questions you have, just ask. When you come back this summer, we definitely have to ride.

I moved to Oklahoma after living in California for 20+ years. I leave in Shawnee a city of 36,000. It is big horse country around here. We are about 20 minutes from Oklahoma City. We just visited friend that are setting up home in the Veterans Colony just south of Wilburton, Ok. It is not far from McAlester and Tulsa. It is a very friendly area, very rural, and quite. The Colony is available to veterans. The land is free with surface roads, water, and electrical. It cost $200 for the land and a $50 application fee. The land is not yours it is always property of the colony. There are not taxes and you can build anything you want. Look it up on the webModerator cut: advertising website This is a old posting so I am not sure of the address offered. We are looking into getting property in the colony we are only about 2 hours away.

Coming back
The office manager where I worked asked me when I plan on going back and I told her the day after my daughter Mylan says I do on June 6th.
Just kidding on the date, not really sure. I plan on spending a week and doing some riding will be staying at Horse Heaven Ranch. Colleen I will definitely get in touch with you. So excited to come back and see more.
The plan is to fix up my house a bit and get in touch with a realtor. Hoping some out of stater wants to live in the Lakes Region, next to two lakes, ponds, skiing, golf, lots of mtns and only 1 hour from the ocean. Pine Point in Scarborough and Old Orchard Beach.
Talk soon,
Krisk
