Hi everyone, I am originally from Oklahoma (born in Broken Arrow, but left at 4 yrs old)...Anyway, I have been in Houston, TX for most of my life & I am currently studying English at the Secondary Ed. level, I am in my third year of college.

I know that there is a high demand for teachers in the Houston, TX area as well as in most of TX but I am curious about teaching & the teacher pay in Oklahoma (my mother's family is in Tulsa). Does the state of Oklahoma have a high demand for teachers or not? Are more cities in need of teachers than others (ie-Oklahoma City rather than Tulsa?) Thank you so much for all of your help.

I work with a couple folks whose spouses are teachers. They indicate Texas pays much better. OK is one of the lower paying states unfortunately, hence the 'brain drain'.

True, but teachers are also the one area Brad Henry has given the most attention to as far as improving budgeting to address that issue.

Hopefully a current teacher can tell how that has worked out thus far.

True. Texas pays better. I hope that Oklahoma values teachers enough to bridge the divide in pay between the two states. Gov. Henry addressing the issue is good news redbird.

Yeah, Oklahoma pays less, but as a bonus, you get to live here!

Look up the school districts located in any city that interests you. Tulsa? Employment Opportunities (http://www.tulsaschools.org/district/employment.shtm - broken link)
Also check Broken Arrow, Jenks, Bixby, and Glenpool....they are all close. Oh, and Claremore. Write to the human resource director for each district--don't just go by the jobs they actually advertise. But, use the sites to get the right person to contact and to learn about the district.
