Nmita, you don't have to settle for "less house". When I refer to employment, I mean full time year-round employment with the group health insurance benies. It looks like the area of Grove would always have part time employment available and especially seasonal work to subsidize social security. I'm in my early 50s so I need a fulltime job yet, but your situation is different so you could very possibly do just fine in Grove.

Betsy,
Hi, It was important to us to be close by a VA. If my husband ever goes into the hospital again I want to visit him daily, and a 30 minute drive is what I could handle. In CA it was a horrendous 1 to get there. I like that there is no rush hour here, and that it is a breeze to get to Muskogee VA. Tulsa doesn't have anything out an out patient center.
nmnita,
When I was a teenager my uncle took me to West Plains, MO. It had been my dream to see the area because I spent my childhood reading books about the Ozarks.
I loved MO so much when I was a kid and got to see part of the Ozarks, but we picked OK because it seemed cheaper, but also it seemed that it could be colder being that it was higher up in MO. I had checked out real estate there.
I remember visiting a little town somewhere outside of West Plains where the town was on a square, and the sidewalk was wooden. I remember going into a clock repair shop with my uncle. For all I know it could have been West Plains but I don't think so. I would love to find that town again and visit it someday.
I still love Tahlequah, but when I travel around and see a cute historic town I want to live there too. I want to live everywhere.

Well, I feel pretty sure we will eventually end up in Grove if we don't get super excited about Neosho. I know what you mean about insurance, we still have to look into what Ok offers in the way of suplimental insurance (probably an HMO) for seniors. We have a great plan here and love our doctors. The bad thing, we are 40 plus miles from Albuquerque and we have no hospital here. We did pass a mil levey in November to fund one, but the state came through with no help and our county commissioners have decided our county may be to poor to handle another tax. Can you understand why we want to move? Of course being closer to our family is still our main reason for moving, but there are lots of other reasons as well.
Jessaka,
I am not quite sure where West Plains is, but Neosho is just north of the OK/Ar boarder. Actually home prices seem to be lower than Grove or Bella Vista.

A quick Google Maps search indicates Neosho is about 15 miles east of the Oklahoma border and about 30 miles North of the Arkansas border (in Missouri). West Plains is 182 miles east of Neosho in south central missouri. Or, as they say in Oklahoma, "Missoura." That's not a slam against Missouri, it's a great state (love Missouri people) - it's just the way I always heard the old-timers pronouncing it when I grew up.

I guess it is like people call the Miami in OK, Miama. I think we always said Missouri but I have heard Missoura. Yes, thanks for the info. Oh, btw, when I mentioned Neosho being just over the boarder I did mean about 15-30 miles depending on which state. I guess when you have spent most of your life living in areas that are so conjested that people drive 20-40 miles to work everyday, 15 miles is just around the corner or in this case, just across the boarder.

Looking to relocate
My husband and I are looking for a small town with a friendly community to retire. We both work backstage and are able to travel for work. We have been told that Grove is a lovely community with lots of golf courses and mild winters. Any more info would be appreciated

We just got back Sunday from looking for the same thing you are. Yes, Grove is really nice and very friendly. Our realtor went above and beyond for us. He was fun, very well informed and showed us lots of properties in our price range. Grove has a small hospital, plus they are about to break ground on a larger one. It is only 40 miles from Joplin, Mo, giving you access to the major shopping complexes, other medical facilities, a Sams club, etc.
Of everywhere we looked it was our favorite. Of course from your sign on I take it you live in or Vegas. Grove isn't anything like the west. That isn't meant to be a put down, just wanted to let you know.

Suz, I agree with Nmita. We were down in Grove last Oct. for the first time and absolutely fell in love with the place. Since you don't have to worry about employment, it'd be the perfect place for you. There is also a huge new resort that will be going up there. I believe it's supposed to be done next spring. Just go to near the top, center of the page and click on "Search". There's a lot of info on here about Grove, but if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask. One of the things that you should know is that they had a rough winter last year. I understand it isn't normal at all, but they had a 10 inch snowfall at one time. We have that where I live, but I don't like cold and snow.

heck we have lived in NM for 6 years. Until last year I was disappointed because we didn't get enough snow each year. I didn't want to see it look like MInnasota, but did want to enjoy some of the white stuff. 5 years, hardly any and it would be gone by the next morning, then came 2006-07. Just like NE OK we got about 10 inches in one snow fall. In fact in just kept snowing and snowing for almost an entire month or so it seemed. I guess it can hit anywhere. Nita
