I have a couple small trees in my yard (<3 in diam.) and it looks like something has shaved the bark off the side of them in the middle of the tree. It doesnt look like a fungus because its not all the way down the tree. Any suggestions on what it may be and what I can do to help the tree?

More than likely it is a critter. They like young tender bark. Wrao tha trunk in folil to about three feet off the ground and sercure it. Animals do not like the taste of foil or how it feels on their teeth. That's what we always did.
