I wish we had had more fires up here, though. I know it could have been rough, but burning off the fields would sure help the grass and lower the tick population........

Up here in Ohio we burn off the dried grass to open the ground space to allow new young grass seeds get to the earth and take over. And its great for killing off fleas and ticks, as well as getting any of the damaging grubs that lie just under the surface.
In Glacier National Peace Park in Montana the forest rangers told us that in the past they would try to stop all forest fires, but now they have learned to allow them to take thier course. By doing to, it lets nature replenish its self by natural means and it done very well.
