I also agree with Stillwater Townie and would like to add that not all of Oklahoma is conservative. Or intolerant. I know plenty of Okies who belong to the old fashioned Democaratic school of thought. I also know plenty of people who drink the Limbaugh kool-aide on a daily basis.
I pretty much agree also, but I got sort of caught in the left/right thing. I know so many people of all kinds, I tend to forget what they are, liberals and conservatives alike, unless they do or say something that hits me upside the head. Then I stop and think about it, and as long as they continue to be non-judgmental about me, I return the favor. That's the main reason I refuse to discuss politics or religion, especially with my friends. Their politics don't really have much to do with the kind of books they read, or the kind of music they listen to, or whether or not they like animals or gardening or any of the other bits and pieces of daily life.

This was an excellent idea, Robyn. I rarely visit the Political section because it's so cut~throat. Instead of sharing new ideas or info, it's like everyone has to be right and their party is the RIGHT one. I honestly wish they'd just do away with the parties and vote for the candidate.

Up here, we had some of the same problems. We're a VERY white state and that was the reason that people didn't want to vote for Obama. Some didn't like McCain, but he was white so...... It's funny cause you could go out for lunch and there would be people talking about Obama being a Muslim and that he wasn't even born in our country~Yea, that's how mis-informed some people were. I still remember the gal from MN. telling McCain that Obama was a a a Arab~Yea, on national tv she said that. Kinda sad to think that some people actually believed that no one checked into it or knew it and they were privy to this info.

What I noticed here had a lot to do with age. Many of the older people were prejudiced and that's sad because you'd think they'd want to be an example for younger people. BUT the younger voters seemed more accepting of having a non-white as Prez. SO, I saw it as more of an age thing. Up here, we're also very Conservative/Republican and that's fine, BUT there are many times I wish there was more balance. Neither party is right all the time.

And don't misunderstand~I'm in no way saying that ALL older people wanted McCain and ALL younger people wanted Obama. It was just something I'd noticed during the elections.

On the bright side~it's possible that the new Administration will be able to turn this mess around. Sallie Mae will bring 2,000 overseas jobs back to our country. There will also be 500 new "green jobs" opening up in Idaho. There's also something about 500 new jobs in Penn., but I didn't catch what they were. They've increased the amount of nutrional aid/formerly food stamps. They interviewed a store owner in a very high unemployment area and he said that he would personally be able to add 5 new part time jobs in his store because of the extra groceries that would be sold.

Nothing big considering there are SO many unemployed, but it's a start in the right direction. Most economists feel we will hit a 10% unemployment rate by the end of the year, but by early 2010, we'll see a turnaround.

I don't think this whole mess is solely the fault of the Bush Administration. Maybe they should've been doing more regulating, but there were a LOT of people/professions that had their hand in this mess. Greed was the number one culprit there and if Pres. Bush would've wanted regulations on things, many would've screamed "Socialism".

I dunno. I just hope that something happens soon. There are people graduating from colleges/tech schools in just a few weeks and there are no jobs waiting for many of them. Nearly as sad as people with families being left out in the cold. IF things don't end up turning around, many people will not be able to recover from this. Just a sad situation all the way around.

I didn't vote for Obama but I am rooting him on for success. To do otherwise would be cutting of your nose to spite your face. In fact, I may be an indirect recipient of the stimulus money. I just obtained a contract position writing a proposal for FEMA Temporary Housing Units (THUs) that was probably a result of the stimulus program.

My main point with my somewhat angry post was that people shouldn't stereotype. I think it's one of the biggest problems in this country that people don't look at those with a different viewpoint as individuals, they tend to group them all together. And to infer that Republicans "hing" on racism and Democrats are "live and let live" types is entirely inaccurate.

And btw, when slavery was going on in the deep south it was heavily Democratic and a Republican President named Abraham Lincoln was the main reason the slaves were emancipated.

I don't call Democrats racist, or say that they "hinge" on the racist side so I'd appreciate the same consideration for my beliefs.

I didn't vote for Obama because I didn't think he had the experience to be in the white house. Since he's already been elected, that is a moot point now. I strongly resent anyone implying I (or anyone else for that matter) didn't vote for him because he's black. That sort of logic would assume that anyone who didn't support Hillary was a male chauvinist? That's why I hate titles (republican, racist, feminist, democrat, liberal, etc.)

That being said, like Synopsis, I am rooting for him every day. I HOPE what he's doing will work. And yes, I think Michele Obama brings a certain amount of class to the white house that's been missing for quite a while.

you were doing fine seabeebolt. i think you should write a letter to the editor of tahlequah daily press. i know they would print it. if you decide to i will send you their email address.

i was just saying that there were other things that bothered me more, like the racism, but not all here are racists, and certainly not all republicans or democrats. i have friends who are mostly republican, but they have said nothing about the blacks, not even when Obama was running. But i know their views from the right wing magazines that I have been given. people here are buying up guns and ammo, but you know what, it is happening in my home town in CA for the same reasons. And Californians are just as racist in many ways, and like my brother said, "They are just politically correct." Well, they are politically correct here just as they are in CA, and just as what happened here during the election, it happened in CA. That shocked me about CA. It actually shocked me about OK too since I had heard nothing until the election.

The other time I see trash in Tahlequah is when I drive out of town to the river, and that is an eyesore.

It was my understanding from being on the political thread, and coming from a college student, that the politics of Lincoln were democratic, that things have switched over the years. I don't know what thread that was or how true it was, but that is what he said and kind of proved.

there are many old people here in tahlequah that voted for obama, and i was suprised when i saw many of them come out of the closet during the election, which helped a lot since I was feeling all alone for a while. all i had to do was walk into the democratic headquarters and run into people i knew. and my republican friends knew i voted for obama and i didn't hear anything bad about it from them.

laura bush is classy.

i was reading a book by a quaker minister talking about how horrible politics has become. not ever being in politics until obama, i didn't know this. he mentioned how when bush was president he was the evil one, etc. and everything that was said about bush, almost, is now being said about obama. politics is pretty bad, and so i moved away from the political forum here as well as the news. i like bryan williams, i think that is the guys name. and sometimes i watch cnn situation room, but i now turn off lou dobbs, and i tried glen beck but he caused me to not sleep at nights. ha. I don't watch limbaugh. i do like rachel maddow but we often watch american idol instead.

and men beat women and visa versa in every state of the union, and in every country, and animals are abused everywhere. just when i hear it it bothers me, and i wanted so much to live in a utopia.

seabeebolt, i am not a jp crew person. so i don't like how micheal dresses. but of course i wear jeans everywhere, and so no one could call me classy. but i like what she is doing. i am not sure about obama. but no one really knows how to fix the economy, so i just hope he does well. he does dress nice for a man in a suit. ha. i prefer jeans, cowboy boots, and cowboy hats myself, but perhaps not in the whitehouse, and certainly not the lbj look.

I am constantly amazed at the reasons people vote for who they do.

I liked John McCain. I would love to do a line or drink a beer with George Bush. I like Obama. I think Michelle Obama is hot. I liked Laura Bush, although I don't think she and I would get along too well.....I tend to be a lot more crude than it appears she likes (I could be wrong, she married George). I think Hillary would be fun, and I would love to swap "war stories" with Bill. I liked Bob Dole. I like Huckabee. I would have enjoyed a horseback ride with Reagan.

That being said, I do NOT like supply side economics. I will NOT support that system of economic development. I support demand side economics. I don't care how charismatic or nice or pretty or anythingelse a candidate is, if they are supply siders, they will NOT get my vote. Period.

It was supply side economics that propelled both the dot com bubble and the real estate bubble. It was deregulation and detaxation of the upper income levels that made this mess. And the deregulation was all done in the spirit of Reagan who has been turned into some kind of hero by both the Democrats and the Republicans.

I have no problem with someone making lots of money. That is not the issue. But making lots of money at the expense of the workers has the effect of concentrating the wealth of the country (or world) into a very few people.

Please note, that the big "taxation" issue today is based on the argument that rolling back the upper end of tax brackets to what Clinton balanced the budget on is somehow bad. Please note that the "greatest generation" had a maximum tax bracket of 95%. Further, that 95% occured during Americas greatest economic boom, that it occurred after the greatest GDP investment and governmental borrowing in the history of the world (until now) called WWII, and that the incredible debt of WWII WAS PAID OFF.

How did that happen? Money was taken from the rich and recycled. For every new dollar injected into an economy $5 is generated in trade and business. When Government recycles the wealth of the nation back INTO the nation, demand for goods is generated. When people create demand, manufacturers and entreprenuers create and make products to meet that demand. This is called job creation.

You can give the rich guy all the money he can bank, and it will not create one single job until someone somewhere wants to buy something. It is only when that happens that demand is created. We have to get the money to the people who want to buy. It is called demand economics, and until we realize that that is what is needed, we are going to suffer the way we have been these past years.....cycles of boom and bust......and the thing is, we went through this in the late 1800's and early 1900's culminating in the Great Depression.

And to date, the Republicans have NOT learned this lesson, they are STILL preaching supply side economics and tax cuts for the rich.

Doesn't matter WHO is running or how much I like them personally. Unless they are demand siders, they will NOT get my vote.

So, if you didn't vote for Obama, you're a racist and if you did your not a racist? By that theory if you turn it around, what does that say for Blacks in Georgia and South Carolina who voted over 90% for Obama? Does that make them racist because his opponent was White? Hilarious. Don't even start with the usual stereotypes you're going to try to post my way because I'm multi-ethnic and am not either Republican or Democrat. I'm my own person and I think for myself - I don't need any political party or party affiliated groups telling me what to think.
