I imagine it's a lot louder than here in Maine where we have a bazillion trees to muffle the sound a bit...

Oh, and hills everywhere, and even some mountains.
Though do you think that makes the difference or is it something else?

Normally I do, but there was one bolt of lightning that came awfully close to the house last night. Whole house shook like someone had driven a truck into it! The dogs fell all over themselves trying to hide in the closet - I didn't think they'd all fit at the same time, but they managed it somehow. I really expected to see a tree splintered this morning, but nothing seems to be damaged.

I wish I knew! We learned shortly after moving here that Thunder doesn't just crack and rumble... it BOOOMS! Sometimes it sounds like a bomb going off and it is so loud it will crack the windows in your house!
Takes a bit to get used to those.

When I lived way inland in Riverside the thunder was usually quite far away near the mountains and deeper in the desert, and the first storm here where the it seemed like the house should shake was incredable. But when I lived a quarter mile from the beach we got the edge of the pacific storms and that lightening and thunder was spectacular. My most memorable moment was watching out the second story window which looked at the main transformer from the Edison plant, where all the juice for the area came from. There was this huge rumble of thunder and a flash of lightening hit the transformer. It lit up like this huge fireworks display and was quite awesome then it and the power plant went dark and in chunks everywhere around. It was night and as far as you could see it was pitch black.
That on gave me great respect for storms and especially lightening and it took them a week in a very drafty humid cold to get the power back on.
I've gotten here where its so awesome to feel all the energy from the storms that my disconnecting of expensive electrical items when its close is only slightly annoying. I'm told its grounded here but had the power knocked out in one room from a surge right after I moved in so...

You have a good point there.
I think I've mentioned that I too lived in the Inland Empire...(SanBernardino) right at the foothills of the SanBerdo mountains.
We did have alot of heat lightning out there.

I'm origanally from Michigan, where there is just as much, if not more. woodland and hills as there is in Maine. but the first thunder&lightning storm in Oklahoma reminded me of Mich, as a kid. Because it was loud up there too.

Thanks Karibear,
I used that to get a visual on what it may have looked like and got a good chuckle out of it.

The best part about all that thunder and booming is the fresh smell in the air after its all over with . The lighting charges the air with + & - ions and the is so clean.
